In 1984 I went to a show in London produced by Charles Mather at a theatre then called “The Magic Castle at Seven Dials”. Unfortunately the show flopped rather badly and the whole project had to close down. Indeed, I saw the last performance since I had brought some children to the matinee and we were bumped into the evening show since the matinee was called off. The show closed that evening. I understood, from an indiscrete usher, that some high dramas backstage caused the cancellation of the matinee.
The stars of the show were Johnny Hart and a gloriously camp illusionist called Zee. They were both most entertaining although that evening a few of the illusions went wrong. I did wonder whether some disgruntled stage hands might have had a paw in that. At one point Johnny Hart turned some balls into vast numbers of banknotes and then told the orchestra, which was somewhere else in a back-room, that the money was to pay them! We were all rendered very excited by this. Does anyone know what happened to Johnny Hart and Zee? Was there any further history to the venture. London lacks a theatre of magic and given this story I suspect that it will remain as such. James |
