Ordering or building my first apron -- what should I look for? What material? Depth of pockets?

I recommend the EZ Loan Jumbo Apron from TJ Myers. I get a lot of compliments from Moms. Holds about 25 balloons per loop, and I can do a 5 hour gig before I have to restock. Plus it holds about 36 different colors. A little pricey for $65, but well worth it. The fabric is very durable. There are actually too many pockets in my opinion. I use them for business cards, bee bodies, and sharpies. Other than that, most of the pockets are empty.

Order direct from twistemup.com. I own quite a number of his products and like them all. There are plenty of options with lots of info on them. I think I actually have the apron mentioned above from them. Whether it's the exact model or not (it sounds close, but they have so many) it's my go to walk-around apron. I have plenty to fill the pockets with. Business cards, sharpies, sorted rounds by colors, imprinted, sorted hearts by colors, blossoms, etc. Reload as always, is a pain, but it's much less of a pain than it could be with this system. It has served me well.

I went to Lowes and got a belt with a couple of pouches. Holds a LOT of balloons and only spent about 35 bucks

I have the biggest twistemup apron they have available(without any mods).I like it if I were to order it again I would lengthen the straps by 1/2 an inch to accommodate a few more balloons..at least Id like to try a strip like that and see, I should say.The busking bags are great as well.
From going to jams Ive been able to see quite a few different styles and ways of carrying balloons. And I think The aprons Ed Chee will have soon are very very good so good In fact I plan on retiring my twistemup apron to my secondary apron and get one of Eds soon. Its a bit pricey but well worth it.As far as I understand he should be stocking them commercially soon. Of course it seems that aprons work great for restaurant and strolling stuff, but it may suit you to have a more work space type work space including pumps, tip jar, wheels for easy movement etc. For fairs, parks and line work where it would be much more comfortable to not have 20 pounds of balloons strapped to you. |

I hate putting balloons in straps. Life is way too short to waste my time doing that. My custom built apron has been PERFECT for my needs along with my custom filbert pump side bags. Pics at http://www.topper.us

I love My big twist'em up apron. The only improvement to it would be to make the strap another half inch longer. 25 balloons is a good number for most colors. For others, it really doesn't scrath the surface.

I find that I can fit more than 25 per strap. Also, as a working pro you'll get an idea of how many you need to have packed, so you can use two straps for pink, but dark brown and gray can share a strap, as an example.

Carl I like your aprons but for me having them all poking out in a crayon box of colors is so inviting to me let alone the kids.I do not really like the throw a bag in a bag thing, just my own opinion. The restocking is a pain but that's why we have children no? Just kidding I can not get my kids in the house when I get an order or come back from the balloon store.

I also have a twist'em up apron and I'm able to get at least 50 balloons per strap. I got three rows of straps, so I normally go 2 straps for each color, as well as one row for my 160 and 350 balloons. My 5" and 11" rounds, 6" hearts, 321 Bee bodies, printed balloons (happy face, aliens, eyeballs, spiderman), balloon putters, balloon cutters (envelope opener) and markers all go into the pockets.

I'm coming a little late to this party, but ... I use one of the busker bags from Twist'em up.
Todd Neufeld once gave me the advice to NOT wear my balloons. The image difference is astounding. Do you want people focused on you or the balloons? If you're wearing the balloons, that is what most people will focus on. I would rather have them focused on me. By working from a bag that is standing to the side, I can more easily establish myself as an entertainer who uses balloons, than a balloon man who is entertaining. This is my preference, your choice/opinion may be different. I built a stand for the bag and I can table hop in any restaurant or stroll at any event. Of course, If you are using a floor pump, then you may not want to have to carry 2 things around while you stroll, so an apron might be your only choice, though I have seen photos of how people have created balloon holders that hang on their pumps. wes holly |

I can't fathom wasting even 60 more seconds of my life putting balloons in straps. You guys have way more patience and time than I do I guess.
My apron is big. Really big. And if I put it on the table next to me, or wear it, there is no doubt the kids are focused on me. If an inanimate object, such as an apron, can steal the thunder of the moment then I am not doing my job.

Used to think that way too....
However changing to a nozzle to end system is faster for twisting, stores more balloons in a compact space and look 1,000X more professional to people.

I have only wore my apron once. I usually set it up as well to my side on a portable fold up table along with my menu board. The apron allows me to keep the balloons organized. I also have a jumbo busking bag that I use for larger venues when there are three or more twisters.

I think "faster" with a nozzle to end system might beat me by 1-2 seconds on a balloon. Technically that is faster but by how much......?? And is 1-2 seconds really worth it for the tons of time it takes to line those up over and over and over?? For my money, it's not. Just my opinion though.
I seriously disagree with your "1,000x more professional to people" comment. Candy in a jar is still candy whether it's in a row or not. Certain things just don't require being lined up as far as lay people are concerned. Does it look nice? Sure it does. Is it worth it? I say "don't think so."

Carl,
I agree with Mark about ease of twisting and professionalism. It is no doubt very time consuming, but I figure I'm going to sit down and watch a good movie at least once every few weeks. I order thousands and thousands of balloons at one time and am usually always ahead as far as inventory goes, so every once in a while I put on good flick and start sorting. It actually makes me feel like I'm working when I'm actually just enjoying a movie. To each his own though. And I don't think you are missing out on too much if you don't sort, it's just a preference for ease and aesthetics. But I don't think the layperson is going to care how their balloon guys packs his gear, especially if there is nothing to compare it to. Grace and Peace.

I have a question about the swifty bags. Do you recommend that over the canisters that hold the balloons? I guess it depends on how many balloons you need right?

$169-$299 for the bag if you get a colossus you then need $600-$700 dollars in balloons to fill.If you can support that much product and keep it filled so the bag keeps organized then it seems to be the best.I however can not support that amount at this time one day I hope to!
