Does anyone have a review for this one by Les Johnson?
Effect: You show a sealed window envelope inside of which can be seen a piece of paper containing your prediction. The envelope is handed to someone of importance who will be at your show. It could be a committee chairman, police officer or local celebrity. he or she signs and dates the envelope so that they will recognise it as the same one later. They also scribble across the flap so that any tampering would be obvious, should the envelope be opened prematurely. A strip of Sellotape is then placed across the scribble to protect it. The window envelope is then dropped into a Jiffy bag which is sealed and handed to the celebrity for safekeeping. On the night of the show the celebrity brings along the Jiffy bag. It is opened and the window envelope removed. It is the same envelope, still sealed and with the celebrity's scribbles intact. The prediction can be seen through the window in the envelope. Held at fingertips, the envelope is sliced open with a paperknife and the prediction is removed and handed to the celebrity. Incredibly, it contains an account of that day's newspaper headlines. It's just about as clean as it gets. http://www.world-of-magic.co.uk/Headline......5167.asp Paul Mc.

While the method doesn't break any new ground, the gimmick appears to be very well designed, providing a relatively clean handling.
Only negative is that it can't be done surrounded - which is important to consider, as some headline prediction finales may involves cameras, etc. One final thought, based on the Martin Breese video....I found his handling of the envelope a little suspect, and this can be improved upon, first and foremost by drawing less attention to this part of the process. I would also use a letter opener (as suggested in the included instructions), as opposed to scissors. Otherwise, this should be quite deceptive and relatively easy to perform. I should preface this review by acknowleding that I have yet to perform Headliner but did spend some time playing with it. I look forward to trying it out in a 'real-world' scenario. |

Thanks Eric.
I too thought that the way that Martin picked-up and opened the envelope seemed a bit suspect. That has got me wondering if this is the same principle as Roger Curzon's 'Miracle Signed Card In Envelope'?..I hope not, because at £37.50 plus p&p it is two and a half times the price!! I will wait a little while and guage the response of fellow Café members before I make any purchasing decisions. Paul Mc.

Looks pretty much the same principle to me too. The effect though is stronger, hence the price I guess.

If it's the same principal why are you saying the effect is stronger?
Magic is a vanishing art.

Principle = how an effect is done, method, gimmick(s) used
Effect = well... erm... the effect... what is happening, perceived by the audience... I thought that was obvious. For example you could use the same overall principle (svengali deck) to simply do an ambitious card routine or to change the entire deck into the same card. The former effect being less impressive - imo - than the latter. Or maybe use an Elmsley count to either show that a has has turned over or to show a card has vanished (again, the latter being more impressive in my opinion). Same here: for the first effect you show that a previously shown card transforms into a signed card (which could be seen as slight of hand) ; for the second effect you show that you predicted weeks in advance what is going to happen, hence psychic abilities. It's just my opinion of course, but I somehow feel that the second effect is stronger. Feel free of course to disagree. Sorry edh, hope it is clear now. |

..."that a card has turned over"... the word "card" is missing at the end of the second paragraph...
