It is the perfect transposition
Both the $5 and $1 can be borrowed. Both the $5 and $1 can be examined at the end. Bills are shown to change in BOTH hands. Simple description (what the audience sees), you borrow a $1, fold it, remove a $5 from your pocket already folded (or you can borrow a $5, I found the pace better with only borrowing one bill.) - $1 is visible at all times - hands are turned over, turned back, bills have changed places. You can repeat it as often as you like. I am using the BeSwitched routine at the end of my routine (with permission from George Hample!) Al Cohen thought is was a unique and creative idea when I showed it to him. Some coin sleights and misdirection are required. Skill level of a 5 is needed. My instructions will be written, simple, and will cover all aspects of the handling. These are very expensive (constructed with real money) and are complicated to make. Once made, they can easily be replaced/repaired. Additionally I will offer a 5 year replacement warranty. That is, when it is worn/stained from use you send me $20 along with all the materials in the original package and I will send back a new package. Is there a interest for the perfect $5 to $1 transpo that cost $100 or more? Remember, a lot of bills are provided with this that can be - god forbid - taken apart and used as real money. Comments appreciated Thanks Tom Paxton |

I don't know Tom.
The effect sounds nice, but the price sounds pretty high. I believe John T. Sheet's Atomic Bills sells for around $30. Not exactly the same effect, but certainly a clean $5 to $1 transpo. It sounds like you put a lot of work into the construction, and your time is certainly worth compensation. I guess I would have to see the effect performed to determine it's worth to me. Best, Sammy

Hi Tom,
This sounds exactly like something that I had created around 2001. It was released for sale to the magic world in 2005, and is known as the "Atomic Bills". It is available as a single effect with the directions and the gimmick. It is also available on the "Above Top Secret" DVD, along with a variety of different bill effects, handlings, and variations on the gimmicks. The DVD was produced and released by Blacks Magic Group in 2008. The effect is now slated to be re-shot, and re-released on DVD with additional information, handlings, and effects. The film shoot is scheduled for Aug 23-27th, 2010. It is being produced by Kozmo, of "Reel Magic Quarterly", and distributed by Murphys Magic. I hope that you will do some research to avoid releasing something that has already been done. You may PM me as well. You may read more about these items by doing a Google search, or on my website here: http://johntsheets.com/catalog.0.html Thanks.

Yup this sound like John's Atomic Bills (which is amazing btw). Maybe you should post a video on it and talk to John about your method.

Hi John
I have "Above Top Secret" and watched "Atomic Bills". We share some of the same ideas and handlings however there are big differences. My version shows a 1/4 of the bill. I can switch between a $5 and $1 at will. Both bills can be borrowed and can be shown at any time. My version can be done with a signed bill. My design is different then yours. Mine is more complicated which increases the skills needed to perform with it. I designed this for a lot of flexability in presentation, for creative people like you. In researching this I spent time with Al Cohen and heard the story of how BeSwitched came to be. Al and George Hample have been friends for many years. In the 80's (not 100% on the dates)Al had been marketing a $1 to $5 bill transpo using only 1/8 of the bill. George came up with the idea of the 1/4 of a bill on the original beswitched gimmick after using Al's original gimmick. Al was shocked at the difference in presentation and BeSwitched soon became one of his best sellers. He credits it to the 1/4 bill size as it looked natural, like you would pull out of your pocket. I'll post a demo soon Tom |

I would have to say that $100 for a bill transformation is effect is way to high. Remember, a Silver, Copper, Brass is half that price and a killer effect. A transformation is a Transformation to a layman, weither it be knives, coins, poker chips or whatever.
Maybe if you have the bills printed you can make it cheaper. Remember those quarter bill business cards that was popular several years ago. They look really real. Al Cohen's bill transpo used fake bill gimmicks, maybe you could go that route to reduce costs. What also puzzles me is you say you can borrow the bills, and yet you need special gimmicked bills. That must mean a switch in and out of the real bills, that is beyond most novice people doing magic on the Café, and thus would hinder sales at any price. That is how I interperate your discription, sorry if I am wrong. Additionally, maybe you could sell a manuscript or DVD and have the purchaser make the bills themselves. Again, though that does leave out a lot of the members that do not like to make their own props. |

Many of us have a bunch of bill switches. I have probably a half dozen my self, so I would guess it's gonna be a hard sell for you. But a vid can never hurt.

Instructions have been written, now I have to see if people understand them!
Daffy is correct, there are a lot of effects out there that do almost he same thing. I do need a video. As I'm over 50 videos and youtube are a new world .... |

After reading the descriptions, tpax's effect sounds just like Atomic Bills, which sounds just like Eugene's Last Dollar, which sounds essentially like Arthur Lloyd's modification to Grant's Slow Motion Bill Transposition (the latter two are both in Tarbell 3)
All nice effects, but I don't see why someone would pay $100 for this effect. I considered Burger's effect just to get his handling (I like his presentations), but decided I could/should just work with the Lloyd's modifiction.

In a copper silver brass you cannot borrow the coins. And to a layperson, when the objects that transform are theirs, that's powerful.
I wouldn't say there was a switch involved but there are gimmicks. It should be puzzling as it is a new design/concept. It is a unique's method that is nothing like Atomic Bills, which I own and have reviewed recently. It is designed for a competent magician. I'll find out how simple when I get into testing. The BeSwitched that I got from Al 20 years ago was in real money. I still have it. I am considering a manuscript however the gimmicks are not simple to make. It's a tough call. When I had lunch with Al Cohen he said to supply gimmicks already made. Denny Haney suggested a manuscript. I'm thinking about offering both. There are special, hard to locate materials used for the construction of the gimmicks and the sizing needs to be exact. Materials cost is $25. As it's hard to borrow fake money so I need to use real bills. Most of the materials cost can be redeemed as the missing pieces are supplied. As bills will wear out there are instructions on replacing the gimmicks using the original as a template. I'm also going to provide discounted replacements if all the pieces are sent back. I'm thinking that is doable. The real price around $75 (because you have real money in the gimmicks that you can reuse) I'm trying to do this right and I'm months away from selling these. It all depends on the testing. Thanks for the input Daffy and Bill, it was helpful. |

It definitely sounds interesting. I have Atomic Bills and Cool Cash which I love both! if I can ask you, what is the advantage of using your gimmicks as opposed to an Atomic Bills gimmick? thanks again, I'd like to hear more details about this!

Also, you may want to check out a version by Ed Andres, which uses a bill folded in 1/4th, and uses a "spring" type of gimmick. I can't say too much, as I don't want to expose it.
Also, you CAN have the bills signed with the Atomic bills.

I'm wary of coin type handlings done will bills. If you fold the bill more than once - especially if you introduce a bill that's already creased... seems too contrived for my tastes.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Hi All,
Just got back from the MAES convention where I had a chance to demo to Marc DeSouza. Marc said that my design is new and unique. He gave me some great ideas in regards to production and format. (Thanks Marc!) I have sent a copy of my item to John Sheets and Bill Hegbli and await their comments/review. I think they will smile when they see what I've sent. I also met George Hample (the creator of BeSwitched) at MAES. Most magicians haven't heard of George. It's a shame as he is one creative guy. He offered a lot of good advice and encouragement. It was the highlight of my trip to spend time with him. Atomic Bills is a nice effect. The DVD is well made and John does a good job explaining how to make and present his gimmick(s). Mine is a completly different design. |
