I have downloaded for free, a book entitled "Modern Magicians' Hand Book" by William Hilliar, copyright 1902. I obtained this book by way of Google's book feature which includes past and present works.
There are lots of not free material as well, of course, including all of our favorites. But the older books, e.g., pre-First Depression era back until the early 1800s are often available for free. I myself am not a historian of magic, but I thought that there may be many who are. If so this feature of Google would be an invaluable resource. Additional works that I saw that are available for free download include works by Prof. Hoffman and Robert Houdin (in English). To get started, go to Google's homepage and click the drop down menu "More" next to the Gmail link. When the menu drops down, click on "Books" to reach the search interface. Use Advanced Search to zero in on what you want to look for or most of the hits will be books that are not downloadable, or not even examinable. Hope you have some fun.

It's on fragment view in Google Books. How did you manage to get it from there?

In the upper righthand corner there should be link that says either "pdf" or "download." Either one should do it.
