Still on my quest for something larger than the cotton thread I have been using for Gypsy Thread. I've been using Coats & Clarks's 100% Mecerized Cotton thread size 50. Although this works just find, at times it's a little hard to see. Been looking for something similar to what Joe Monti uses in his routine "I got the World on a String". I live in a very rural area and my options as to where to look is very limited. I have searched my local sewing shops (all 2 of them) and have not been able to find anything similar to what Joe Monti uses. Most likely I will have to order something on line. However, I would have to specifically know what to order first. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate this information.

Yarn would be my choice as well.
I first saw Bev Bergeron use yarn on an old tape. |

I have been looking at yard also. My problem is where I live is about a 3 hour trip to a large town. I have looked at what's available in the two sewing shops where I live and have not been able to find anything that works. Both of these shops have a very limited selection. I was hoping that someone has found something specific and could possibly provide me with the product information so I can order it on line. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
Basting thread is one alternative. If you can find it, darning yarn, made of 100% cotton or wool, is the best I have found. Respectfully, Paul Green |

Richard Hatch of H &R Books had some spools with him at the SAM convention that were a nice thickness. Check with them. I bought a yellow spool.
Jim Cellini on his DVD uses the thickest thread I've ever see anyone use for Gypsy thread. You can also see it on the WGM DVD.

The proper thread for this is only available in Europe. They make a heavier "Basting Thread" then what is available in the United States. The European basting thread is also easier to break. Taylors use this thread to assemble clothing before final stitching of the garments.
That is what you are looking for is "Basting Thread", and your local thread shops should have it on their thread rack. If you are looking for what Joe Monti is using, then you should contact him, being he is selling some of his ideas, he may be open to selling what he uses. |

For months I searched for a tried many different threads and strings for the Gypsy Thread. Something that I found that worked great for my purpose was to buy white twine (found it at hobby lobby in the sewing section). I think kite string may work as well. In any case this twin is made up of several layers of strings. I cut a section and separate the threads. The resulting thread was large enough for stage and yet broke very easy.

Have you tried a google search for basting thread, I'm sure you can find something here in the States.

The Basting thread sold in the USA is stronger, it is available, and will work, but is very thin and a little harder to snap. The sting idea may have some merit, as long as it is 100% cotton. That is what will make it easier to break. My suggestion is to consult a professional Taylor in your area. Taylors that make suits for men. They may be able to suggest a supplier or give you a sample or actually be able to sell you a spool. |

There is a simple white yarn at Joanns fabrics that has some glitter to it. When the spotlight hits it it can be seen 30 rows back!
Plain and simple..................yarn Joe Monti |

Richard Hatch had some thread like that at the SAM convention. If you want the thread to be seen from a farther distance, you might consider the glow thread.
