You must be a citizen...too bad; if you weren't, it would surely be an undue burden to have to produce papers for the cop to verify.

I agree with Cyberqat and others who say that policing is a tough job and there are all kinds of police officers, and there are those, as Lobowolf says, who will lie, even in court.
That is why the Arizona law enforcement against illegals gets me nervous--I know theoretically that legal immigrants would not be harassed, but in reality there are going to be (and already are) lots of phony stops and frisking of non-Anglo looking people. That it is how it is. And whether it is an undue burden or not, it is wrong. One case may not be an undue burden, but many cases in a community, is. In one small largely non-white neighborhood in Brooklyn there were 50,000 stop and frisks, with an arrest rate of less than one percent, over four years. A grand total of 25 guns were found. Perhaps those who are not affected as much can afford to be complacent--much like those who have never been in a courtroom might find it hard to believe that police would lie. That's why it's important to hear what the legal immigrants are saying in Arizona on both sides of the issue.

Dangest police I ever saw was in Boston. When I first got there on my first tript hey were beating some guy at the airport. That was nothing. My Irish buddy and I go to that area that is a closed off street in front of that department store that use to sell the bridal dresses (how is that for obscure?). This seemingly homeless man was on a bench and looked to be sleeping, and all the tourist were walking around and avoiding him. This cop stands there, with the standard bully club in hand and looking away from the man and says "Move it along pal, this isn't the place for you", no response, the officer says "Hey, get up and move it along", no response. The cop taps him on the arm with the club and the old guy falls over and he's dead! That cop had a complete "oh sh*t" moment and changed from tough guy to needing help real quick!
Doug, I would have arrested you. Chance, if you just cooperated then you would have been there five minutes, you brought it on yourself and their job is to pull over cars and check for drugs. You wasted your time, the officers time, the supervisors time, and the judges time, for nothing. |

Odds are that while that cop was wasting time harassing you, nearby, someone's house or car was getting broken into, and the response to the person that's calling in the crime would be " sorry, we have no unit's available at this time ".

Santa, you weren't there, and I've told barely half the story so far in here. You don't know anything. To make a judgement call from so far away from the facts only goes to show how contemptuous you are of my rights, and how absolutely arrogant you are as a person.
A cop may ask anything he wants. But that does not mean I have to agree. Can I step into your home? No, you may not, at least not without a warrant. Can I search your car today? No, you may not, at least not without a warrant. The thing that cops hate most is not guns or violence. What they hate most is an informed citizen. Yes, cops lie. |

I think this country would have different attitudes towards immigration in general if more people were aware of what their own ancestors went through to get here and what they faced when they arrived.
Unless all your ancestors made the crossing on the land bridge, you are the child of immigrants.

Well in theory your right chance... but it all hinges on something called "probable cause." I don't know this for a fact, but I've heard it said that the courts have upheld your refusing to allow the cop to look in your trunk as probable cause for him to search it.
If that's true then theres rather a catch 22 there.

Chance, you shouldn't complain about things you bring on yourself.
Can I step into your home? Sure! Come on in... (why a cop would be at my house I don't know since) Can I search your car today? Sure! Have a field day.... (cop gives quick look and tells me to have a safe day) The thing that cops hate are @$@holes who waste their time fighting over a hill that means nothing. Cyber....what is yer point? |

Yup, I think within the last century, around WW1. My moms family came over the land bridge on one side and from Ireland in 1724...their immigration process was walking off the boat. My dad's side came over as slaves....I'm kidding! They came over from Wales because they were hard rock miners and my great great grandfather and great grandfather were sandhogs who dug tunnels and the base of the Brooklyn Bridge out (one of 'em got blown up when doing the Brooklyn Bridge and lived, he literally got blown through the bottom of the river and was picked up out of the water, a few years later my grandfather was born...). Sandhogs....they built NYC.

Well Santa, is it's really so meaningless then why doesn't the cop just walk away and go on to the next person?
What you are advocating is a totalatarian police state where the citizen loses all control over their private property any time a cop gets the least bit curious. |

They have to act like they are earning their money.
They have highway patrol up here on 80 that are marked Drug Interdiction or something and they have drug dogs and all that. I, not being a drug person, didn't realize that there was so much dope running through here but it was like 95 out of South Florida back in the big coke days. Certain folks will get pulled over and if they are clean they can move on or hang out all day, you decided to hang out all day. You are lucky you didn't get pulled over in my county in Georgia, they would have shot you. |

Every time you open your mouth Santa you just add more fuel to the fire. If it's not cops pushing their way into my house or my car, its cops threatening to shoot me over a traffic stop where they don't get their way.
You're not describing officers of the law, you are describing criminal sociopaths. |

I think there are happy mediums, but no easy answers to these things. There is always a certain balance between safety and freedom, and we never really have decided in this country exactly where we want that balance to be.
But most cops I think are just caught in the middle, trying to do their jobs without getting killed in the process. They don't make the laws. By and large they don't even make the decisions on how to enforce them. They are handed (likely somewhat conflicting) policies and directives and, like most of us, have to do the job they ar given in the safest and best way they can. Some do a better job of it, some do worse, welcome to humanity. I do know that it is human nature to give no respect to someone who gives none to you so I always start my interaction from a position of respect and cooperation. If I disagree with the cops call, I can always go to court on it later. BUT as I say I've never been manhandled by a cop. If that was what I grew up with I'd probably have a different attitude.

They come to your house? What exacty are you up to?
I never said my county cops would threaten to shoot you, they would have just shot you. I'd have testified on their behalf by the way. |
