OK, let me get this straight. A friend of mine (#1) who is a magician and a very good amature photographer took promo pics for another magician friend (#2). Magician friend #2 insist on paying magician friend #1. Magician friend #1 doesn't know what he should charge. What is a fair price

It really depends on how much time, work, money, and friendship is involved here. I'm thinking of offering magician #1 a favor in return. When friends offer me bookings I always try to return the favor.

Yeah, this is a hard one without more details. I do photography professionally on a part-time basis and I've shot publicity photos for several performers. The price depends on what was involved in the shoot. I take into consideration time and set up of a studio. (I don't have a permanent studio.)
How long was the shoot? Did it involve a complicated lighting setup? How many poses did the photographer provide? Did he do a lot of work in Photoshop? |

Lots of us have Photoshop, please tell me how this helps you establish a final price for your pictures?

Don't pay ANYTHING...you can get them for free on modelmayhem.com. It is a website like facebook/myspace for models and photographers. Ask them to do it TFCD (trade for cd) and its free.
I don't advertise my blog on here but I just made a video that talks about getting free promo photos and shows you some examples of the ones I got for free. This is the link to the video: http://paidtoperform.blogspot.com/2010/0......als.html Just remember.... ModelMayhe.com |

That secret has been around for decades to entertainers and models in the know. It used to be better known as TFP (trade for prints, but as Benji said with the digital age it's now TFCD. Just beware as this can often be the basis for a photo scam than can cost your hundreds or thousands in reproduction or post-production packages. My advice is getting the shots and getting the prints should be two separate service by two different professionals (or semi-professionals as many are that do TFCD).

Modelmayhem is not the basis of a scam. It is a collection of photographers, models, makeup artists, etc that are looking to build their portfolio. Some photographers do charge but most will do them for free. And the ones that charge will always tell you before you meet.
Mindpro, you must be talking about the modeling agencies that say they will get you modeling gigs, etc but you have to pay $397 for a photo package to start, etc etc. Modelmayhem is exactly like facebook/myspace. Below is a photo from my most recent shoot I took with a photographer (for free) using light painting photography to create the cool effect. Click here to view attached image. |

I found a great commercial photographer who is one of the best in the city. He's expensive, however he loves performers, so he gives deep discounts for bands and other acts. A shoot with him only costs me about $250. I haven't shopped around for a photographer in years, but I would think that is a reasonable amount to pay. As mentioned above, it's hard to say without more information. |

When I do a photo session, I always include basic Photoshop retouching, which includes clearing blemishes, whitening teeth, whitening eyes and I have been known to shave a few pounds off performers. In addition, a headshot can often use an increase in saturation of the iris, etc. Sometimes, people want a lot more done. When you have a lot more Photoshop retouching, it takes a lot more time. Some people think that, just because you own Photoshop, you can do what is needed but retouching in Photoshop takes up more of my time than anything else. I am a member of a couple forums for professional photographers and one of the most common subjects is how to reduce the time spent in Photoshop. Michael Quote:

Your photographer may or may not be any good. It's also somewhat insulting to say "Don't pay ANYTHING...you can get them for free." What if people decided it wasn't worth it to pay you for your skills. Just work out a trade. Is that really the way you want people to look at business. By the way, typically photographers who are dong TFCD are the ones looking to build their portfolios. It's far more common with models than entertainers and the really good pros I know won't do it for someone that contacts them. They only do TFCD if they see someone they particularly want to work with. |

I don't see how it can be a waste of time because you can see the type of pictures they take on their page. If you don't the pictures then go to another photographer's photos.
Have any of you guys tried ModelMayhem? I get all my pictures by asking photographers from that website to do them for free. From professionals like Rob Hammer (http://www.modelmayhem.com/833251) to people going to school for photography. If I don't like the photos they have on their page then I won't do a shoot with them. Nobody has to take the advice of going to ModelMayhem. I'm just letting you guys know of a resource that I use all the time. |

$180 to $250 would be a realistic range for a good photographer in my experience. Well worth it for sure. Nothing communicates your personality and brand as well as a photo.

Eldon, try to save a lot of money by having a friend/relative do it for you. If you have your own camera, have your friend/relative use it. Use a solid color sheet as the back drop. Make sure a lot are taken,(at least 50). Take certain positions several times.

Benji, you seem to have gad good experiences from Model Mayhem, and that is great, but despite what you have said, there are many unscrupulous photograpghers there involved in many types of "shady" business practices. And yes there have been several scams that I am aware of as I eluded to before. All I was just saying is Buyer Beware. We have had our agency listed and involved with this site and know of tis and have heard from others with unbeliveablle stories.
While there are probably many decent photogs listed there, there are some that use this site only as a lead gen for high priced "scam-type" photo packages, as a means to meet and shoot female models, and even as somewhat of a social site under the guise of offering free products or information to help young models with their careers or befriending newbies as someone who will try to help them out "as friends". All types of possible things as you can imagine based on it's predominately young female clientele. Just be cautious is all I was saying, it may not be as easy, cut and dry as you made it seem, although you seem to have good experiences which is great. |

Personally, I would rather pay someone who knows what they are doing. It's really not that expensive to hire a pro and a good photo can make you a lot of money. I also disagree with the suggestion of doing it yourself as, typically, the difference is painfully obvious and the result will demonstrate to your prospective client how seriously you take your business. |

Just my .02 cents worth here, but two simple things:
=1) To each their own… AND… this is IMPORTANT =2) In each situation… BUT… each with a SPECIFIC plan and desired outcome! (Beforehand!) I HAVE done most of the above… just not “Model Mayhem” specifically. - I HAVE used WalMart/Mall type photo places and the results were excellent. (DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!) - My own home-based photos work incredibly well! As you see my promo & products you will not be able to tell the difference between what was shot at home and what was taken by a pro… NOT cuz I’m any good, but because of how I apply each case, situation and desired outcome to my plan. (DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!) - High School, Trade School & Collage Creative Arts dept. (For MORE than just pics… Hint! Hint! Hint!) – Amazing Results! (Again DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!) - NEWS Paper/Magazine Photog. – For my money and experience, for MOST of my best shots a “Photo-Journalist” has always produced the BEST, most story-telling pics since that s what they DO for a living… tell stories with pictures! (Again DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!) - Totally Pro Art Studio Photog. - - Anywhere from a couple hundred to several thousands for any given shoot. (Again DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!) Some good, some great, others... not so. - …etc. You will fine the good, the bad nd the ugly in EVERY single one of the scenarios. It’s life. Plan well… shop well "DEPENDING on the situation and planned/desired outcome!” (Get the point… hehehehe!) Too… this is NOT about “How To Screw-Over Another Creative Artist” by cheating anyone out of their just rewards for their time, talent and treasure being offered and ultimately provided, (as I choose to participate anyway…) but rather a very-well planned, calculated and desired outcome based on each specific situation and goal centered outcome! - - I have done trades, CDs, cash and all kinds of deals in each Win!
