Correction: A Picture is Worth 84.1 Words
“What, then, does it mean to ask whether a picture is worth a thousand words? The comparison of pictorial and textual notations can teach us something about both, and it is possible to make that comparison empirically. This paper describes three empirical studies that cast some light on the question. The claim made in the title may not be completely serious. Nevertheless, it is not the first time that an academic paper has made some judgement about the accuracy of the proverb.” -Alan F. Blackwell- http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~afb21/publications/Student-ESP.html I don’t how or if this relates to magic but I often wondered if a silent act was better than on with words. And it seems to me there exists some magical ideal proportion. It mentions here the combination of pictures and text is more memorable than either alone and it seems that it could be applied to the performance magic. But I can’t seem to think straight about it. I am wondering if each effect would each ideally have 84.1 words? Well its just a thought.......you know me.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

You could test this out thusly: Perform your favorite card routine in the normal fashion with words and the eyes of the spectators open.
Now, perform the same routine with a new group, eyes open, no patter. Now, perform the same routine with a new group, eyes closed and patter. Attempt to determine which is the most powerful. See article noted above for help here. ;-) Best,

I like Brad Burt's idea about testing with an existing repertoire because the ideal ratio of words to visuals will depend on the piece and one's own style.
For most people, I'll bet using the fewest words possible to accomplish the purpose will work best!
