The Johnny Thompson wand spin is more practical in my opinion. I taught the Mora/Vernon version in Genii with quite a few illustrations back in the early 2000's. I made the ends of the wand different colors to avoid confusion. Silent Mora did it with a folded fan. Then it was changed to the wand. In watching many people do the Vernon way as a vanish...not many guys really get away with it. It "tells", so to speak, if not outright flashes. That's why I say the Johnny Thompson spin after a fake "put" is more practical. Audiences don't give points for "gee, he did it well for such a hard move...it almost fooled me". One man's opinion. p.s. David Roth actually worked on this move and learned it from the Professor and could do it well. Unless it is done perfectly it flashes or tells.
