Doesn't always.....
The implication is a street singer struggling through life. You think that her oscar nominated daughter helped her some? Knowing the history of some of those on AGT does make me realize not all the stories are realllly factual. |

The oscar-nominated daughter (Gabourey Sidibe) has a father who is a NY cabbie, and her mom apparently really has been performing at a New York subway station for many years. Her daughter might have helped her get an audition but, if so, what about it? Then again it was in the news months ago and long public knowledge that the mom had a good singing voice and AGT might have invited her to audition on its own. Or the Mom might have auditioned in New York like regular people, given that she has attended and won auditions in New York (e.g., for the subway gig) in the past. http://www.zimbio.com/Gabourey+Sidibe/ar......car+Date http://estergoldberg.typepad.com/views_f......way.html GABOUREY SIDIBE may have been nominated for an Oscar for her amazing work in "Precious" . . . but that hasn't changed the fact that her mother sings in the New York City subway system. Alice Tan Ridley says, quote, "My name is not on Gabby's paycheck." But that's okay with Alice. She used to be a nursery school teacher and a teacher's aide with the Department of Education. But for the past 18 years, she's been singing three times a day. If you're in the city and you want to look for her, she works the Times Square station, Penn Station and 14th Street / Union Square. She says she earns enough money to, quote, "pay my bills and feed my kids." Alice says she's actually been offered better gigs . . . like, you know, INDOORS. But she says, quote, "People always say, 'Why don't you sing in clubs?' I tell 'em, 'This is my club.'"

The implication was she was a poor street person who took cover from the storms brooding outside in the subway where she sang in desperate hope that a few coins would be tossed into her cup....weeeeeepy.
There are a few guys that were on that show who would say "My dream is to work in Vegas...if only I got a chance!" Weeeeeepy. Actually those guys DID work in Vegas, had shows, some for a good run. So, they be full of @@#$). Why not say "I was in Vegas and would like to go again". Here is my question about the show and maybe you know. I could look it up but I don't want to. I thought in years past, I've only seen two seasons, the prize was some money and a years contract to do a show at some hotel. The way they phrase it now there is a tour of some performers and the winner headlines and the show will end in Vegas where 'the winner will headline a Las Vegas show'. It sounds to me that the do the tour, it ends in Vegas, then that is it for the winner. Which is it? I realize that with the exception of Terry Fator the show has been a failure at producing a real talent. |

Santa, I guess I did not see the same implication you did, not in any to say that yours is unusual. I just wasn't thinking along those same lines.
I did not know the answer to your prize contract question. I rarely watch the show, and don't normally pay much attention to it. But wikipedia says the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Got_Talent Season 1: Some early ads for the show implied that the winning act would also headline a show at a casino, possibly in Las Vegas; however, this was replaced with $1,000,000 due to concerns of minors playing in Las Vegas, should one become a champion. Season 5: This year, the winner will receive $1,000,000 dollars and a headline show at the Caesar's Palace Casino and Resort on the Las Vegas Strip. There will also be a live tour showcasing the acts which were voted through to the final round of performances.

So they fill a theater in Vegas with family and friends when dark and the guy had his headlining show...
I have to say that over all the show sucks. Howie is great, he gets it, I like Sharon, but the acts are pretty aweful for the most part and they let really bad ones go too far. I do think the host is great, I forget his name. It also drives me nuts that they run the same episode over and over. Thank goodness for So You Think You Can Dance, they have real talented people and nothing but....and I love girls in short shorts. |

As I said, I rarely watch AGT, but on the bits I've seen I was annoyed with the comments the host makes off to the side while the performer is performing. Save the comments until the performer has finished, I say.

Man, there are so many talented people who are legit. Too bad if you put a camera up the freaks and wanna be's push ahead of a lot of the talents.
I was talking to my friends sister about American Idol and her try out etc.. In her case they never showed her tryout, didn't show her on TV at all in fact until she was in the top 20 and then the judges commented how they didn't recall her and were surprised by her voice. Either way she told me that the initial try out was strange because she was with three of her friends, all of which she said could outsing her, and none of them made it past the initial singing part (except Latoya obviously). She said that the reason was the producers or whatever were specifically putting through people who were either crazy or couldn't sing and thus cutting out people who could sing. She said she didn't get on TV during the try outs because she was quiet and didn't try to stand out and get attention drawn to her, she just wanted to make sure she had the lyrics down and when not practicing she was at home, she lived in LA. That is why I like the dancing, if you can't dance you are not getting past the first stage. |

Every once in a while, someone who HAS SOME REAL TALENT gets noticed... Even if she literally had to sing underground for 20 years before this. (And raising that Daughter, "Why oh why, would she help her Mum now?" ) I'm well aware of what happens in contests like this... It's always unfair. It is showbiz, and the "freaks" do tend to overwhelm the "normal" ones... Just the nature of the beast. Once in awhile, some Talent shines... Maybe here it will be just for a little while (she is 58). I say celebrate that while it's here. That's why I posted this. But you knock the thread down from the beginning.

She can sing alright but I was refering to the BS story they try to generate behind it. She goes down into the subway to sing because she likes to. They try to make it sound like she crawls out a tent in a park, picks up some half eatin hot dog, then heads into the dark wet caverns under the city where she can sing when the police are not hassling her in hopes of getting enough money to survive another cold night...oh and her daughter was nominated for an oscar!
I don't consider the ability to sing to be that great of a talent, literally millions of people can sing, song writing and instrument playing, that takes talent. |

I think that they were hoping for another Susan Boyle kind of thing. I got a good giggle out of the dorky kid dancing at the start of that.

Oh yeah. It is funny how if someone does well then some people will try to be that type of performer. Regular guy does opera well in UK show a bunch of regular guys try opera on the US show and the audience who wouldn't know good opera if it fell out of the sky and landed on them reacts like it is the greatest thing ever. Regular ugly middle age gal sings well, regular ugly middle age women show up in droves for AGT. They should cut out the good people and have a show called America Has Nutjobs and the people will show up.
There is a nut who has appeared on AGT as something I can't recall, a battle of the bands show as the lead singer of a band, and just recently on the Last Comic Standing as a comic, he's too old for Idol. Me thinks the boy is too desperate for fame. Oh, he also was on an episode of Gene Simons show as a fanatical fan selling Gene a doll. Hey, I just found his website for those of you wanting to be a fan of this amazing non talent: http://www.fifilarue.com/ |

My daughter did the American Idol audition at Walt Disney World. Afterwards they said they couldn't vote for her to enter the regular competition (which was only WDW related, not television show related) because they were looking for "pop" voices and she had a "legitimate Broadway" voice.

Yeah, they hate those legitimate broadway voices. Latoya made it to 5th place I think, she was up against Jennifer Hudson as the bottom two, and I don't think either of them figured out what the Idol people wanted.
