I'm an old fart and I can't relate to younger magicians I see in the internets. I'm here to talk to other fellow old farts like myself.
My first exposure to magic was felix the cat comic books. At about 8 years old, I attended a taping of Captain Kangeroo and was wowed by (what I thought was a magician) called sheri lewis. (little did I know I would meet her later in life and recieve some lessons from her). That christmas I recieved the tarbell course in magic. It wasn't in book form, but a bound note book. I dropped out of school at 8th grade adn had many jobs: miner, prison guard, private security and manager for a brothel. Throughout my many jobs my love was performing magic for kids and their families and consistantly work kids' parties and family functions. Now that I'm retired, I am at a loss what to do. I do magic almost full time, not because I have to, but because I can't stand to stay home and stare at the walls. Up until 2-3 years ago, I never even been on the internet and I feel like I'm in another twisted world. I was widowed early in my marriage. I have 2 kids that are lifers in the military - both are stationed in europe. I am a God fearing christian. Most of my time is reading classics, shakespeare, greek mythology, and poems. I have my vices and strong opinions. The current state of magic boggles my mind - no one studies the classics and I feel that the real secrets of magic is safe, however; the things I see: the quick tricks, over priced garbage makes me upset. I like talking about kid's magic and look forward to people with similar interests HH |

Hank… welcome to the Café. I am a young old fart… I have a birthday this weekend and turn 51 and I too have my vices… I smoke too much and appreciate a good meal.
I enjoyed reading your comments on your life and magic. I too don’t relate all that much too the younger magi, but it is the same in other hobbies and interests… the times they are a changing. I am hooked on the classics, especially the Cups & Balls; I have made many good friends worldwide that share the same love for the Cups. Take care, Bruce |

Bruce,
I love the classics of magic. I enjoy the cups and balls, however; I don't have a chance to do them often (not strolling, not stage). My favorite routine is Frank Garcia's. I seen Paul Gaertner a few years ago at a lecture perform his routine. He did it half assed, but the funny thing is, it was still phenomonial. Thing of beauty HH |

Welcome Hank!
Do not fear. Many of us read the classics - and not just magic! You mentioned poetry. We will have to talk sometime. Among my favorites are Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Isaac Rosenberg, W.B. Yeats, Chaucer, and many more. Mythology is a subject I love dearly. Have you read Joseph Campbell's series on myth? They are simply splendid. As you are no doubt aware, Shari Lewis' father was a professional magician. I couldn't agree with you more concerning the glut of one-trick pony DVDs in magic these days. But these DVDs are bereft of any sound theory for the most part. However, there are some younger authors who have a firm grasp of theory such as David Regal, whose love of magic is apparent in every word he writes. My heroes are Tony Slydini and Harry Lorayne. In my time here (wow, that phrase sounded like I am serving time) I have picked up another mentor, Vinny Marini. Truly an excellent magician and more importantly, a wonderful human being. I do not do magic for children, but, I will talk about anything at all that has to do with this rare and beautiful art. So, I hope to see around the Café! Ahimsa, Vlad PS: I too am a Christian. I am Greek Orthodox. |

Hank… I use to perform kid parties when I was in my teens and switched to close-up magic. Right now I am a serious hobbyist (hack) and the love of Cups and Balls has hit me hard (I have collector fever)… The Vernon and Mark Wilson routines have been my go to. I agree Garcia is great, I don’t have his C&B book but I do have other materials from him. Right now Vernon, Ammar and Brian Watson are my C&B go to guys, Harry Lorayne and Paul Harris pretty much are who I go to for close-up magic.
Take care, Bruce |

Welcome Old Fart! One old fart to another..... I still do many of the old tricks that I did 50 years ago. My audiences still love them and to the young generation.... they are NEW TRICKS. Of course I cleaned them up , a little paint here and there, new stories and violla, a new trick. What is old is new. I have done some of the oldies at our SAM Assembly and the members didn't recognize some of the oldies until after I was done. Welcome and glad to have you aboars.... 71 and still performing.

Welcome I am mid timer here. Will be getting a "57" chevy car(d) on my next birthday.
Classics are still good. I was brought up on folks like Dai Vernon and Slydini...who rest on the shoulders of those that came before. Was lucky to take some group lessons from the later. Tarbell was also one of my first manuals...I learned from manuscripts, books and lectures. I do see some value in the DVD craze. Welcome aboard. Only been studying and sharing magic since 76. That year the big I.B.M. convention was in Kansas City. It came around here in 2003.
