Edinburgh Festival has just started and last night I took the chance to go and see Barry and Stuart's new show '98% Seance'.
Now typically Barry and Stuart would probably come under a magic heading, however after watching their performance last night, I can safely say they have pulled off the best live mentalism show since Derren Brown's very first tour. Don't get me wrong, I imagine B&S still class themselves as magicians and in no way shape or form did they claim to be reading minds, however what I will say is that they have taken a few classics of Mentalism and made them incredibly entertaining pieces! The one which stands out, which I hope they don't mind me mentioning, is that they perform, without a doubt the best Q+A ever performed. That might seem like quite a bold statement. Quite simply, they don't do the mind reading... someone else does! It is total utter genius! I know I'm a massive fan of the guys and anything they do, they've clearly put LOADS of thought into it, however this show in particular was right up my street as I got to see lots of my favourite routines take on a B&S slant. Simply brilliant! Anyone in or around Edinburgh in August, I can't recommend enough that this is the one and only show you must go and see! They are playing every night at 10:20pm at the Belly Button in the Cowgate. Col.

B&S are two very clever and creative performers. I would absolutely LOVE to see their version of Q&A. I just wish guys like this, including you Colin, would hop the pond and come to the states for a bit. I'll even buy you your first pint!

Cheer man!
Well, I'll be at Mind Vention in October and I think it's looking like I'll be performing at a certain Magical Castle in the new year! Hopefully get to catch up at some point then! Col.

Well, I wasn't planning on coming to Mind Vention this year, but I'll do my best to make good on that pint.

Since it is impossible for me to see this show here in the States, I would love to hear a more detailed description of the show. It sounds incredibly original and entertaining!

I'd love to hear a description (from the audience point of view) of the show! Has anybody seen it?

John, and those who attended Barry and Stuart's show:
I am paticularly interested in hearing a few details of the (apparently fresh) approach taken in the Q&A. To quote from Colin at the beginning of this thread: "The one which stands out, which I hope they don't mind me mentioning, is that they perform, without a doubt the best Q+A ever performed. That might seem like quite a bold statement. Quite simply, they don't do the mind reading... someone else does!" This is similar in approach to a routine I am currently expanding and developing, based on empowering and unlocking inate abilities in the minds of people in the audience. Would love to hear a description of what the audience experiences during their act. I don't want to be accused of trying to steal someone else's routine. Just looking for inspiration in developing my own. Hope and trust that'll be understood. |

... it won't be the same theirs is very specific to the content of their show. So I wouldn't worry about it
Best wishes, Col.

This is a difficult one to review since the guys have specifically asked no one to talk about 'what happens in the show'.
But suffice to say it's as clean as Colin says. A person (at random) is taken each night from the audience and placed in a light trance. They then start calling names of audience members who stand up and are then given information which only they could possibly know. They are asked if the information is correct and they confirm it to be true. At the end of the show the audience are informed that NO stooges have taken part but that they should feel free to come back any night and check. Also (no doubt) both the subjects in the audience and the randomly chosen medium from the audience are asked by people after the show what happened. They will concur that everything the audience saw was 100% genuine. Barry and Stuart do not look upon themselves as mentalists. Purely magicians. Personally, I believe they are Warlocks of the highest order. The only good news is their E-slie Count isn't as good as it used to be. Ha ha. ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
