I'm attracted to the idea of psychic readings with bones, and I'm loving my new book on it; but I've been wondering, why use bones? Specifically, why would I be using chicken bones?
It seems to me that something like this would be used with bones from an animal sacrifice. The chicken(s) would be sacrificed to a particular spirit or god and that spirit/god would then answer questions through the bones? It seems like they would be particularly good for communicating with a divinatory spirit. What do you think? Is there another good reason you can think of for using chicken bones for divination? Is there some type of symbolism that might be appropriate? Is the chicken worshipped anywhere, or sacred to any particular gods? Could this be tied to the tradition of the frizzly rooster in hoodoo? Any thoughts would be appreciated thanks Courtney Kolb

They're not chicken bones; they're Raven bones or bones from an Albatross or even a Buzzard. You just happen to find them at the supermarket disguised as chicken. Strange that so many things "taste like chicken."

On 2010-08-06 19:38, Magical Dimensio Stephen Minch has a great routine with a magnetic bone in the book of forgotten secrets. I like the idea of adding various claws and roots as well. Definitely a high John the conqueror would be good as well as a crocodile or badger claw and maybe a lodestone. I've been thinking of using these to supplement the reading system in Ron Martin' and Larry Baujkin's book. Posted: Aug 6, 2010 8:01pm A jack ball would be an appropriate pendulum as well, but I don't think enough people would know what one is for it to add to the setting.

Why bones? Because it brings us back to oracle operations involving necromancy... bones, once living now dead... a link between this world and the world to come... all that jazz.
I bought a ton of bons from the Bone Room and made a bunch of casting bones - hard to beat for getting visceral reaction.

Hey! I know nothing about chicken spirituality - only that there is a rooster in chinese new year, you could write some spiel about the ancients that were born in the year of the rooster would use bones for divination?
On another boning (heheh) note, Raven Magic does a FANTASTIC effect using bones. It's called the oracle... I Gleaned these words from Raven's site: "'The Oracle'. It has 7 rune pieces. The spectator tosses these out on a mat. He/She is given a reading via the pieces oriantation (face up/down) and location to each other. Some of them are eliminated and the remainder are thrown again. In the 'standard' edition, the rune that the spectator ends up with matches an identical one on a voodoo necklace around the magicians neck. In the 'deluxe' version, the rune matches a tattooed piece of skin in a voodoo jar!" The bits for it are beeeyootifull... You can view this product here: http://www.merlinswakefield.com/mentalis......ndex.php Or if you go to ravenmagic.co.uk you can view a couple other effects of hers and I'm sure she will be happy to talk about any other bone related bits... She's on here actually, you should look her up. Anyway I'll stop fawning over these glorious prods, I do so love a bone effect **fights every impulse to cry out 'that's what SHE said!** xx VB |

Hi guys
Merlins should have a new bone effect on their website in the next few days. Its already in stock if you ring them. Its called 'Bones of the Vampire' and is a genuine bone PK'd. It reacts great with the block magnets that they sell for £15. It is handmade by Raven Magic. Im not sure what their price is, but it includes one gimmicked bone, wrap, cord and a cd rom with poems, stories and routines for the bone. |

You have one of the most powerful divination systems in history and you look to add a magic trick to it?
Think for a second... On another note if someone asks if they are chicken bones tell them no, they are kitten bones. That should be helpful. |

The bones you use may be linked to your spirit animal or a local myth.
So, chicken bones... Are you colonel Sanders ? |

So which human bones would be best for bone readings? I imagine finger bones, but I am not sure.
It would be quite a set of divining devices and I would think the impact on the sitter (if you could get one) would be pretty strong. |

the impact on the sitter (if you could get one) The "if you could get one" is a big point; I think I'll stick with chicken bones, plus maybe a few zoological and herbal curios to accentuate the reading.

Speaking about divination and human bones, the skull is the ultimate necromantic device. In Roma, necromancy was practiced by writing some question on vine leafs and introducing them in the skull. Later, answers would come in dreams.
That was one of the various necromantiae at the time. |

A kneecap might be intriguing.
Fingers, toes, and ankles are more traditional. The scapula is used in some places.
