My site is wordpress as well. http://www.puremagiclive.com
it is soooo easy to work with. I did pay someone to set up the "backend" part - the installing it, but I can change things in real time on the fly. So easy to work with!

The plugins are easy to use and download too.

Ok so I go away for a week and yall start talking about my life....

I live breath and speak wordpress... I LOVE IT...

Last week we launched 12 wordpress websites and within 4 days 8 of them where on the front page of google for their primary keyword

All the sites I use are wordpress and less than 1/3 or them are blogs

to answer the question about why the free hosting isn't working...
it's because some web hosting sites in the name of security block some features (it's no as much security as it is laziness and lack of tech skill)

I like Hostgator.com and have over 100 wordpress sites on their network

as far as wordpress being slow.. um sure if you add a ton of plugins.. but it outranks standard websites EASY.. and Google has a illicit love affair with blogs and wordpress ..

I will do a wordpress plugin roundup on marketingmastergroup.com this upcomming week

Dunno if I just think differently than 98% of everyone else, but WordPress confused me!

Rather than turn this forum into a WP help page, can I safely assume that WP has it's own community forum for people like me that need to be led by the hand to see what's right in front of them?

Ed, You can find great WP support here: http://wordpress.org/support/

The forum is filled with discussions on any topic you might need help with. Very helpful people there.

FYI, I make custom WordPress themes. If you want to make your site really unique and not just another free WP theme, PM me. It's generally under $100.00 for a completely unique theme.

http://www.DenverMagician.com is an example of a WordPress theme.
http://www.iDoMagic.com is an example of a Drupal theme that matches the other.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who read the promise that it's easy as pie to set up, completely intuitive, you can do it in 5 minutes ... and utterly failed. I STILL don't know how I lucked into my blog/podcast setup, and I couldn't do it again for anything.

Ross, you're a great guy. And I'm sorry you have a grudge against Wordpress.

I don't know who said ANYONE can setup a WP blog in 5 minutes. That's like saying ANYONE can do a Faro shuffle in 5 minutes.

But if you have a knack for coding, understand basic CSS and HTML, then Wordpress is a great fit for many people and IS a very effective tool.

Sorry you've had such a negative experience.

Perhaps instead of trying to trudge through the install/design process solo, having someone guide you through the new forest would have made your experience more positive. There are PLENTY of us that try and help others for FREE (Mike and Dean come to mind, but there are many more). I don't accept money for web design, so I love HELPING others build them, but there are plenty of talented folks here who do accept money to design and they are pros at it because that's what they do.

We all have specialties. Let's help each other by using those specialties, not just write off a useful tool because of a lack of understanding. We're here to help with that understanding and raise the bar for everyone. Together, we can do much more than alone.

Ed, Ross, I'm with you my friends Smile

Scott your last post really makes me feel good. Like you said; yourself,Dean, Mike, Scott G., Kyle and all the others ( sorry for those who I forgot to mention their name) are really valuable people for me and for our art. I really appriciate all your courtesy and willingness to help.

Starting with wordpress is frustrating at the start I think but once it rolls, it will go easier.

I'm repeating a post;

Also found this site to be very good in price; http://dollar2host.com/ $2 a month and they have unlimited domain hosting, it is call addon domain,I learned from Scott Smile

I am a self-admitted "techno-Boob" and NO TECH, but like ANYTHING I Learned how to use Wordpress and it is (for no-techs) still the simplest and easiest web system for the investment I have seen...

(Beside Yola or one of those... accept WP.Com Is easier that that too!)

CERTAINLY easier than an HTML Editor and up-loading a site in the traditional sense that is for sure!

OF COURSE, like ANYTHING, there is something to be learned… that is just LIFE!

Mike,
The version thing you said stopped me on the way. My host offered 2.3.3 version I tried to upgrade using some plugins but couldn't. Haven't tried uploading the newest versions files manually, so don't know if it will support or not, yet...

Yeah...

I ran into this a lot helping people get their sites built..
One company after a week of work told me that they would only support what they allowed to be installed (2.3.3 or OLDER)

this is why I tell people (HOSTGATOR) because I know they are setup correctly

Hi,
Wordpress is great! I was gobsmacked when I read the post it's only good for blogs!

Here are 3 recent magician sites we have designed in wordpress:
http://magicste.co.uk
http://www.fletcher-magic.com
http://www.paulmetcalfe.tv

As I hope you can see it is quite flexible!
Any WP questions then give me a shout,
Cheers,
Ade

Ade,
Surely you jest. I mean, wordpress is just for blogs! *grin* Hopefully after seeing your work, others will be convinced.

Nice work. I always enjoy your creations. Great design. Never Flash.

From Ed's post on plugins...

The guy who wrote the article emailed me with a reply to what I said on the plugins.. Which shows GOOGLE INDEXES THESE "WATCH WHAT YOU SAY"

ANYWAY I told him I would pass on the info..... so here is a paste from the email

First off, if you take a look at Woopra you'll probably love it, the biggest difference between Woopra and Google Analytics is that Woopra is Real-Time and the WordPress plugin offers some pretty slick additional features like auto-tagging commenters. You can see an interview on the uses of Real Time Analytics I did with John P. the CEO of Woopra here: http://www.vsellis.com/get-online/interv......alytics/

Second, regarding your the "No Category Base" plugin.. you are "partly correct regarding permalinks, however if you set up your permalinks to include the category name in the url (which can be good for SEO depending on how you have your categories named and set up) then when you browse to a category archives page WordPress will in include "/category" in the URL by default, which does you no good (from an SEO standpoint) and really just clutters up your URL's.

For example, if you have a category called "card-tricks" and someone goes to that category page the url would be http://yoursite.com/category/card-tricks so the plugin essentially tightens that up to http://yoursite.com/card-tricks.

Just to be sure I quickly tested this on my own site I went to my category page for WordPress How To's (http://www.vsellis.com/wordpress-how-to/) then turned off the plugin and refreshed the page and got http://www.vsellis.com/category/wordpress-how-to/ (yuck) so I can confirm that this has not been fixed in the WordPress Core Code.

One more question - will WordPress help fix the IE/FFox/Chrome/etc issues? I've made some strides on CSS and HTML, but I've got enough going on right now to polish my magic without trying to learn two foreign languages, too!

If I use the WP site, can I just insert content and let the site take care of browser compatability issues? (If not, what about Yola?)
