Where can I still buy Flash Powder (white). I know how to make it but I know its also very dangerous and would rather a pro do it. I understand its no longer being sold in magic stores (except for red colored) and just purchased two new flashpots but the only thing lacking to use it is flash powder. Help?!

A lot of Magic Shops, Theatre Effects Houses and Pyro Joints still sell white flash powder. Google it. They will most likely send you two ingredients to mix together (that's how it's done now). I would guess Magnesium & Potassium Nitrate. That's what I used years ago.

The reason they send you as two ingredients is that when they are seperated, its legal to ship, but when combined they become explosive and its illegal to ship.

Ive asked mjm,magictricksite.com,and a few others and everyone says it no longer carries it. Ive also checked with Theatre Effects and they took it off the website. I just don't know of an alternate source. Does anyone continue to use this and buy it and if so from where?

Oh, no. I hate to hear that it is getting hard to obtain. I don't use it very often anymore, but I still hope I will be able to get it when I need it.

Magishaun, can you please tell uis where you found it?

Thanks!

If worse comes to worse, you might have to use black powder from a sporting goods store. Be sure that you know what you're doing if you have to go that route. A thin coating, enough to cover a dime, is all you'll probably need.

Hope this helps. If anyone finds any others please post a link for those who might be interested as well.
Thanks

Whilst I hate to be a downer, things HAVE changed in the US since I built flash pots and blew up a lot of flash powder in the 70's. Two things, specifically, have impacted the use of pyrotechnics:

In the aftermath of 9/11, Homeland security has made the use, and possession of any explosives HIGHLY regulated. You really need a pyrotechnics license to use them at all.

In the aftermath of the Station Night club fire, most jurisdictions have really clamped down on the use of any pyrotechnics on stage. Even Flash paper is illegal to use in many places. As the TD of a 1,400 seat theatre, I will occasionally allow a lit candle on stage IF a series of precautions are met. NOTHING else in the way of fire or pyrotechnics are permitted.

If you are dead set to use flash powder, you will need to thoroughly investigate the licensing needed, and comply with the law. Even at that, you MUST clear it's use with both the promoter and the venue - and in the likely event that they say "no," have an alternate - non pyro - plan for your show.

Fire has traditionally gone hand in hand with Magic shows - but times have changed. Do NOT underestimate that fact.

Tell that to America Got Talent, they shoot off such large fireworks that it scares me just watching on my television.

Thanks Shaun!

Alan mentioned using black powder. I have used FFF Black Powder for many years, but it is different than flash powder. It creates plenty of smoke, but it smells worse than flash powder, IMO. Flash powder creates more flash than black powder too. Some effects that I have strived for in my shows in the past worked better with black powder, and some better with flash powder.

Check with your local Fire Marshall. In my opinion, if you don't do this, and if you don't receive official, formal training, you are being iresponsible & reckless. (I'm starting a new sentence here for greater emphasis.) If you don't check with the Fire Marshall, and if you don't receive official, formal training, you are a fool. I have several friends that are properly trained, and they are VERY careful. There are very good reasons that laws exist around pyro and flash products: They have hurt & killed people.

The expectation that an education in pyrotechnics can be gained through a forum on magic is as ridiculous as the expectation that an education in magic can be gained through a forum on pyrotechnics. The big difference is that even the most poorly-performed double-lift will not result in death.

Please do NOT discuss pyro here at the Café. Discuss it with your Fire Marshall, your pryo instructor, and other trained persons.
