I believe I was one of the first to get this PDF.
It is his variation of Kenton Knepper’s Kollosal Killer and it seems to be endorsed by Kenton Knepper himself. The Red Envelope is much more streamlined and very clean. It does not use any psychological forces and is surefire! The card set is halved, nothing is gimmicked, there is a built-in applause device and I love the no-ambiguity equivoque used! I changed my KK to fit this new handling/ presentation with little effort. If you do KK or any form, you will really appreciate this. http://magicboutique.sg/index.php?page=s......temid=59 |

The red envelope is opened to reveal its contents for a show-stopping finale!
Whether Knepper endorses that or not, personally, I tend to be wary when the blurbs don't tell me anything else than "show-stopping" finale... It may be in their view, but I'd rather prefer to know what happens, if I have to decide that it is "show-stopping" for my needs, too. Quote:

Hi good point!
But, I think the reason why it is not revealed exactly is more because it will give away the method, much like the wordings for KK |

I had the pleausure to receive the beautiful ebook THE RED ENVELOPE from JC SUM and Magic Babe Ning.
It is a wonderful evolution of the classic Kollosal Killer by Kenton Knepper with very clever linguistic deception! Im really, really impressed from this work and I highly recommend this to all the performers! This is a "real" Killer!!

May I ask a question about this clever linguistic deception?
Will it work in other languages, or is it a somewhat English oriented? solution (assuming that the original KK works) Is it any better than the above mentioned Heirloom Redux? Or is it a way to combine the two? Thanks for answer, Norbert |

Norbert, are you French ?
If, yes, you can adapted it with some works.

No. I'm Hungarian.
But, I think this " you can adapted it with some works" means it rather language dependent, you just can't really translate it and go. |

Hi,
This is my first time posting in this section of the Café! Thanks everyone for your comments on this! Norbet, you have asked a very valid question. There are 2 original contributions that make The Red Envelope unique and different. The first is the linguistic deception and approach that eliminates any ambiguity from the spectator's choice of card. While this was designed with English in mind, it is very possible that one small part of the deception will not work in a particular language. However, there is an alternative approach which does not lessen the effect of the deception and I have now updated the manuscript to reflect this for performers not presenting in English. I have sent the updated PDF to everyone who ordered before this update. The second contribution is The Red Envelope itself and the contents. Paolo's skeptism is justified but euroillusion was correct, it cannot be revealed as it will reveal the method for The Red Envelope. You could combine it with Heirloom Redux but would have to make the necessary changes to fit the presentation. But, really, the red envelope approach can also be applied to other routines, not just KK. This is what I can offer. If you order The Red Envelope and find you feel you have no use for the approaches and thought behind it whatsoever, I'll refund you 100% - no questions asked. My only request would be you not share it with others, even it could not work for you. My primary purpose of releasing this is not monetary gain but is to put it out there as I feel there is originality of thought and approach that can be applied to other routines. Hope that helps! J C

Hi for everyone!
Me : Ordered it, received it, played with it, tried it out. Now I try my best to review this without exposure, which is somewhat hard, because what you get is way to handle the KK out, and a linguistic method to guide the participant in the preferred way. Let's start with the latter : It is based on the usage of an English word, and it helps creating the illusion that the participant had a free choice. In my language there is also a similar word, but its just not as strong as the one in the manuscript, so I decided to go with alternative route; you'll find at the end of the PDF. But, if you are performing for English speaking audiences, its a very fine method, and you'll find great usage in your effects. But, if you don't perform in English, you can still use the core method adapted to your language. Let's continue with the Red Envelope: First, its non gimmicked. Second, its role : It will bring you the success, and the successful conclusion at the end of your routine, and no, its not in a way you think. KK is based on presentation, this is another tool in your arsenal to enchance it. Now I try to be very cryptic. The only similar kind of thing I've ever seen, was the Assertive Positive Negative from Scott F. Guinn. Let me say : If one effect is orange, the other is grapefruit. One of the useful thing to do is to adapt the red envelop contents to your personal needs. Reactions : Very good, my audience seem to enjoy it. When I wrote "it will bring you success", I'm not joking around. Now I'm starting to constantly use it. Regards, Norbert |

Thanks Norbert for the review! I'm glad that you found value in the "real" work behind The Red Envelope.
I hope you understand why there was a need to be cryptic, as the revelation of the envelope's contents basically tips the basis of the method. I think many are seeing the applications of the approach far beyond just KK. For example, it can be applied to Max Maven's "Geometric Coin" from The Blue Book without the need to do any switches, when needed. There are many dozens of mentalism plots that can benefit from The Red Envelope approach that can used for both close-up & parlour. So actually, The Red Envelope is NOT just for fans of KK :-D Thanks again!

Hi everyone,
Here is another review posted with permission by John Teo, President IBM Ring 115: "Kenton Knepper’s clever concept used in his original effect “Kolossal Killer” is so versatile that it spawned many variations in presentations. This is evident in the many editions of “Killer Konceptions”, a book that contains subsequent contributions by various magicians to Kenton’s Kolossal Killer effect. Just as you thought all ideas concerning the “Killer” have been covered, along comes “The Red Envelope” by J C Sum. In effect, the performer takes out a red envelope from his wallet and places both the envelope and his wallet on the table in full view of the audience. He also mentions that there is a prediction card inside the wallet, and he will reveal it as well as the content of the envelope at a latter stage. A spectator mentally chooses a playing card in a very fair way. The performer takes out the prediction card from the wallet – it proves to be the wrong card! All is put right when the content of the envelope is revealed! The trick seems impossible to explain since the spectator merely thinks of a card – no physical deck of cards is involved in the selection. There is a comical element where a wrong prediction is righted. There is a version where the correct prediction is revealed, and there is still a comical climax at the end. It is easy to perform. For those who are familiar with Kenton’s “Kolossal Killer” trick, you will appreciate that the introduction of the “red envelope” (and its content) gives the following benefits: - Psychologically impresses the fact that everything is on the table at the onset before the revelation of the chosen card. - A comical ending to the routine. Other positive contributions to the “Killer” effect: - A clever equivoque to simplify the card selection. - The prediction card can be examined. - The thin wallet helps to eliminate the idea of using “outs” in the revelation. This routine has been officially endorsed by Kenton Knepper himself. The manuscript is well written by J C Sum, and includes a script for patter. He covers all aspects of the presentation and gives alternative endings to the routine. However, you need to have the original instructions for Kenton’s “Kolossal Killer”. There is information on how to download a PDF version of the instructions. Highly recommended." Thanks. J C

Ditto what JC Sum & John Teo said.
I have played with the Red Envelope for a while and it´s great. I like the new approach JC gave to KK. This is something you can use in the real world. Also I don´t find language limitations, I was able to adapt it to French and Spanish languages without problem. Thanks JC for share your version of KK to the magie community. |

Hi,
Thanks for the kind words Mind_Magic. Unfortunately, the website selling the product is down and the tech guys are still resolving the issue. Will let you know once it is up again soon. Just to let you know that I've been working on the "Red Envelope Applications" which brings the principle beyond KK. My schedule has not allowed to complete it yet but it will be sent FREE to all buyers of the Red Envelope and included in all future orders, at no extra cost. Thanks. J C
