I do a lot of day care shows, and it being called a glorified baby sitter is very age dependent. The infants are kept fed, and changed. The one, two, and three year olds are given age appropriate toys to learn from. The four, and five year olds are taught the basics to be prepare them for first grade. Of course there is nothing better than a couple of proactive parents.

Baby sitting is the general term for watching children of any age. Ever hear of anyone calling baby sitting a 6 year old "six year old sitting?" Nor do you hear child sitting too often.

When does learning, or education actually begin?

When you find out it was all lies.

Let me spell this out again.
Number one. Did I say that they shouldn't go to such a place. Number Two. Yes I said they didn't really have "Lessons" But did go further and say they wouldn't learn something? The answer to both one, and two, Is an emphatic NO! I said no such things. Sheesh people are touchy. as well as intent on reading things into comments that aren't even there nor implied. To answer your question Al I would say a child starts learning if not before as soon as he or she leaves the womb. Why I leave it up to maybe even before. It's rather a given that the unborn child does indeed hear sounds while still in the womb and some play music for the unborn child etc... So Yes learning may very well start before birth. Now what is going to be read into this post that was not said? I'm sure someone will find something as well as more unsaid things in My first post. |

My educated guess is that they WERE a baby sitting service. They're are "daycare centers" all over the place. I wouldn't put my child in any of them. I perform in them all the time and I see what goes on behind the scenes. Classrooms are in no way close to the legal teacher/student ratio, unsafe conditions, etc. Most of the staff watching the kids are kids themselves...working there as an after school or summer job kind of thing. However, there are also REAL PRE-SCHOOLS out there...but you must know where to look. I dated a young lady many moons ago who was a Pre-School teacher. She got her Masters in early childhood development/education and was hired to teach at one of the top Pre-Schools in town. This school was not a "day care" nor were they baby sitters. Every teacher there had degrees in early childhood education. There is "some truth" to what you have stated...but to generalize it to ALL SCHOOLS is ignorant. I'm not calling you ignorant...only your generalized assessment.

Yes I lived in an area that was zoned for residential and commercial use. Just to make that clear but the baby sitting service was not also a home so as I said next wrong response? Also I was not wrong in anyway shape or form My very first post was very correct go educate yourself. |

When you say that you lived next door to a pre-school, one could only assume based on the info you provided up to that point, that it was an "at home" school...in which you would be accurate...many of them are nothing more than glorified babysitting services...
What you fail to admit is that you were incorrect in your statements. You are in fact generalizing your idea based on one school that you lived next to. There are real pre-schools (both public and private) that are not day care centers or babysitting services... I think my experiences of dating a young lady with a degree in this very area holds more weight than the place you lived next to...

So you are saying, we use a lot of energy on washing our hair and true believers to save energy and the planet would shave their heads bald.

Whatever...believe what you want to believe.
The bottom line is that the problem that I originally posted about (before everything went WAY off topic) has now fixed itself as we have her enrolled in another school.

Most all daycares teach things like: How to get along with others, how to share, and how to play fair.
How to clean up your mess, wash your hands, and then take a nap. They teach the important things in life. Maybe that is why daycare costs more than college. Tom

I think you have got it, that's hillarious. One time I did a show at a pre school, and I had to usr the men's room. I asked the staff and they sent me to a room. There were six toilets, and sinks in that room, but the toilets were about six inches off the ground, and the sinks were at my knees. I left the room only to find the whole staff of the school laughing at me. Then they sent me to the staff facility.

Al that is funny. Our local magic club using my daycare for the monthly meetings.
When a new guy comes, we send him in there. We had one guy come for several meetings before he found out. But seriously, there are some new reports out showing that it does indeed cost more to send a child to a good preschool for four years than it does to college. Tom

Though it's been a while, you might be interested to know that the Comptroller's office for the State of Texas only accepted MC and Discover, as of the Q1 filing deadline, for online payments of sales taxes and things like that. It may have changed, since I saw the Texas Workforce accepts Visa now, and it would surprise me if the other state agencies didn't follow suit.
There are subtle differences in the Visa and MasterCard acceptance policies, which may account for their not taking them. It's a tortuous route, and for that reason, I not only accept cash or check only, I ususally pay by check or cash -- just my individual rage against the machine. |
