On the whole, I like Sammy Smith's tape, but I agree, some effects are stronger than others (but isn't that the same with any tape?)
I also liked Kidshow Konnivery.
I thought Leveridge's Magic Party had some good ideas, but I would recommend Smith and Garrett.

Smith and Garret are both good. Also Steve Taylor has some pretty nice tapes out there on the market that gives you some nice routine ideas. I would look into those as well.

I'd probably rate Mark Leveridges 'Magic Party' as my favourite. I also like Dan Garretts one; Hickman's ones are pleasant, though a lot of his presentations are a bit perfuntory. I've not seen much of Sammy Smith on video - I've some books and an audio tape that are ok - possibly a bit wimpy for my taste.
'Childrens Magic the Herbert Way', by Terry Herbert is great. I really don't care for Dan Harlans video at all (too much screaming, too many expendables and too much reset), Dave Risleys 'Glove Puppets 101' is pretty good - a bit strange, but good. Flora and Co. have a lot of interesting kid show stuff by Brian Flora, Docc Hilford and Mark Strivings.

Mostly, I guess, we rate these things by how close the performers style is to our own, and how much useful material we learn from them.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi:

Here's my list:

1. Ken Scott's Birthday Dough

2. Dave Risley - Self-esteem show

3. B.J. Hickman - Birthday party video

4. Brian Flora - Magic Class Video

5. Pat Page - Funny Business with kids

Sammy Smith is okay, but not my style...Mark Daniels - nice guy, but definitely not my style...Dan Harlan's tape - good, buy you'd go broke trying to do the show on a regular basis. Some of David Ginn's tapes are very good - others are so-so.

I like Trevor Lewis' tape too - especially his card across routine.

Perfunctory---"just going through the motions"---which is how I felt about the Hickman stuff---I bought all 3 of his tapes at once so I learned a valuable lesson about that route---ha!--lol---sniff-----Cheers!--Jimeuax Smile Smile

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification. I only have one Hickman video "The BJ Hickman Magic show"
and I certainly found this one of my better video's and noticed nothing "stale" about it
myself. In fact I liked his performing style as opposed to say Mark Leveridge whose childrens persona always makes me cringe (even though I know him and he is a nice man and has some writings which are also good).

I must admit the same thing with Dave Risely. Just not my style at all. I like watching Sammy Smith. I find his gags funny but verbal gags of that sort don't work well for me. As I said elsewhere teasing seems to be something which plays big for my personality.

Concerning Leveridge and Risely--do they seem "harsh" with the kids? Sammy seems more like a "Mr. Rogers" type of character (do you get Mr. Rogers in the U.K.?). I am not trying to criticize any of the guys, by the way... I am just trying to match up my style with a video. Thanks to all who responded---this will narrow my list down and save me some cash! I was at KIDABRA in 2001 and saw Ginn, Risely, and Smith live and the guy who really killed the kids was a guy named Bruce Bray---If he ever puts out a tape, I'll be the first in line!----Cheers!----Jimeuax Smile

HI,
Not too harsh. But for me too childish in their manner. I dislike performers that seem to snap into a different voice (like a nan talking to a baby). This is just my opinion but I do not see that to entertain children, even young ones, that you have to be silly to the point of stupidity.

Interestingly there was an article on the news recently saying that children prefer to watch TV such as soaps rather than the programs made for them, because the kids find the programs that are designed for them ... below them.

I also have and like BJ Hickman's videos. I find his thinking very well thought out and creative. The kids seem to always love what he does and I think his tapes are well done. I got some good information from watching them.

Phillip--I think that is true about T.V. programming. One of the favorite tricks with the 4 year olds is the disappearing Hank (with at TT). I would have guessed it would not have gone over so well. The 12 year old of today is like the 15 year old when I was in school. I think it is good at some part of the program to actually do SOME "skilled magic" (or something that appears to be skilled)like manipulation,, to show them that you really are a "magician". They really can appreciate the skill involved, although I wouldn't have guessed that to be the case. The old "pulling off of the thumb" that everybodys uncle does---also gets tons of response--just a throw away but they remember it.Anyway, back to the show,--It seems that Ken Scott, Terry Herbert,Dan Garrett are the ones I should start with. I have a Steve Taylor tape on Vent work, and I really like it. I met Steve at KIDABRA as well and he is also a very nice guy. Also--some of the Kid Show guys want everything to fit in a briefcase--so most of their stuff tends to be like a picture of something. It packs flat and is very convenient---but the teachers are bringing in puppets and manipulatives---so if a magicians show is not MORE interesting than the regular classroom teacher--you're in trouble. Thanks again!----Jimeuax

I agree with Phillip. I am not crazy about "funny voices" or baby talk in kids shows.

I would describe Leveridge's persona as "antic". Works for him, just not for me.

I like Smith's "gentle" persona. He doesn't talk down to the kids; he talks to them and his jokes, although silly, are not childish.

How can I get Terry Herbets tape? You can't find here in the states.

There are really not a lot of tapes of children's/family magic. That is unfortunate because the majority of the work out there is being done for children or family.

I too like Dan Garrett's tapes. I like Risely, Sammy, some of David Ginn. All of these are not my style. But that is Ok because we should all find our own style.

When we buy videos it should be for sparking ideas in our minds.

Thanks
Ken

Ken:
Nicely said. Indeed, we must all find our own style and what works for each of us. Often times this is through trial and error. But you realize what style provides you with the best reactions with the least amount of effort on your part.

Ken:

Joe Stevens has the Terry Herbert tape listed in his videotape catalog; so you should be able to get it from there.
