I spent a lot of time in Las Vegas when I was younger. I picked up some tricks after seeing some shows at the local magic store and started preforming in high school. I have been semi-pro ever since and lately I have started updating my material and skill set so I can do a few more shows.

Found out I could 'pop' a coin out of my hands. Did some more research, found out it was called the muscle pass.
Went on from there. |

Started with a sort of contact-juggling & manipulation. Then, with new friends doing manipulation soon found out about magic tricks and the like.

Magic award show happened to be on tv and my 3 yr. old loved it! We watched the whole thing, and she was so excited by it I decided to learn for her.

Ey my story isn't that romantic at all. I woke up and decided I want to become a magician. And that was it.

I think for me it started with watching 'the World's Greatest Magic' series that used to be a yearly occurrence right around this time. I think the first one was in 1994, and I was 4 at the time. From that point on, I wanted to record every piece of magic on TV that I could. I ended up with stacks of VHS tapes and many, many hours of magic that I could watch anytime I wanted. This continued ever since, as I watched my VHS tapes turn into DVDs. Sometime after that first magic special, I received my first magic kit, and began showing off effects to family. My interest gradually grew and grew, moving onto instructional tapes, kid's books, and more magic kits. And, it went from there...all from a simple TV program. Who knows what would have happened if I had turned the TV on just a few hours later.

I have to agree..Father Photius what an amazing story. For me, my father was a professional magician and member of SAM Assembly #4 in Philadelphia. I remember him doing tricks for me at a young age. He helped me learn card tricks when I was about 6 or so. Together we both watched Magicland of Alakazam and Don Alan's Magic Ranch. It was our time together. I remember Dick Gustafsen coming to town to do shows and my dad would take me over to see him. He and Dick were friends from the SAM. In 1963, my dad took me to my first magic convention the MAES in Philadelphia. By then I had accumulated several stage tricks, but the one that blew me away was the cut and restored dental floss. A magician from South America, I seem to remember, was doing it...I saw it a bunch of times and never caught on to the trick. To this day, it is one of those magical moments.
Later that year my dad died ( he left our house on Halloween night to go to the hospital and died of a massive heart attack some 19 days later. It was tough. But then Jack Chanin took me under his wing and guided me for a while as I helped out in his shop. I stayed active in magic throughout my career, with the exception of a 20 year break here in Dallas. Not sure why, possibly the $$ as I was starting my own business and the cost of IBM, SAM local club and Magic Castle dues got to be a bit much...but now I am back and happy to be in magic again. Though the downside is I can remember effects, but forget how to do em and I really need to work on my sleights!. |

My story isn't unlike a lot of others. There were several events that coincided around the same time that propelled me into magic. I got my first magic set when I was about nine or 10 which was around the time I remember seeing Marc Summers Halloween Magic Special which featured Lance Burton. The stuff he did just blew me away. About a year or so later I saw my first magician in person: John Louis from the Cincinnati area who performed magic at a lot of local elementary schools. He did a drug/alcohol free program that really impressed me. That is how I got bit by the magic bug and have had it ever since. Funny how one or two events can affect the courses of our lives isn't it?

I wanted to learn soooo bad as a kid and wasn't allowed. If it wasn't school, music lessons, or my mothers hatred, tae kwon do lessons, I wasn't allowed to do it. So I grew up and forgot about it until a few years back. My then hubby and I were laughing about the things we couldn't do as kids and were doing now. The subject of magic came up and he said, 'well, what's stopping you now?'. Even if it only became a hobby, I was game. So I hit google and it lead me right here. I lurked forever without registering and got a list of books, beginner advice, etc.
Grabbed Royal Road and Mark Wilson's book, and had soo much trouble LOL. I'm dyslexic and reading has never come easy to me. So after weeks of complete frustration I worked my way through a few chapters, but you know, I never finished that book. Mark Wilson's book kept me going thankfully, if it were up to Royal Road, I would have quit. We hit up Misdirections over in SF, almost an hour drive from me, and I came out with Michael Ammar Easy to Master Card Vol.1, I was recommended this due to that lovely reading problem. I haven't gotten as far as I'd like to after these few years, I'm a single mom of a special needs kid, but I'm still ok at it. He and his classmates love it, and now he's starting to show an interest as well. We're using it to improve his social skills, so in short, doing what your mother didn't want you do to can sometimes come out alright. |

I got started when I... wait how the heck did I get started in magic? I honestly cannot remember! wow I didn't realize that till now... I have a feeling Criss Angel ( I know how bad he is) sparked the interest, anyway I suppose it will remain a mystery along with most stuff in magic

I fiddled with magic when I was a kid, but I did not get serious about it until I got to college. While I was there I had the good fortune to be put on a floor in the dorms where the community advisor was a fantastic card worker. It took me forever to convince him to teach me and once I did he graduated a few months later, but once he got me started there was no stopping me.

As a young Boy Scout, I would read Boy's Life magazine, which had a regular column on Magic by Bill Severn. My school library had several of his books, all DIY stuff, and I would happily make phantom tubes from oatmeal cartons, rummage Mum's pantry for tin cans to make production cylinders and fix l**d w****ts to s**p wrappers.

I mentioned to my wife that it would be fun to learn magic. For my birthday she got me a magic set. It took off from there. I started doing magic for my kids class at school and I got hired by one of the moms and next think I knew, people were calling me to do magic shows. One day I decided hey I can make a living out of this! So here I am, aprofessional magician. Who knew?

I started when I saw the Sherlock Holmes movie *blush*. I was inspired by the villain's ability to deceive people, and so learned a card trick. It went from there. I learned another, then another, until I was obsessed. Only lately have I wanted to get good enough to show people, but I have been doing magic in one form or another for almost a year. I am hoping I get good enough to do parties and shows and stuff before to long. I am an actor by nature, so the showmanship is easy enough for me, I just need to practice the actual slight of hand.

I've always been a hobbyist! I love video games, playing music(guitar), writeing music, recording music, airbrushing, magic the gathering card game, texas holdem poker and other random hobbies I like to partake in. I still try to do all of them when I can or need a little cash. That's what kindof led me to magic. I didn't get an early start as some of you did but I'm determined to do well! Actually after I bought my first home one night, we got done working on the house and I told my wife "I'm going to learn to do magic!". I had thought about it before but Never acted on the urge. This time was different! I got some videos and some cards and set out to learn what I could! I'm now working a lot on my slight of hand and learning anything I can to improve!! I think deep down it was always something I thought was amazing and I always wanted to do it! That night I set down and orders some videos online and since I got those I've been doing street and close up magic ever since(about 5 months ago). It's been a blast! My mom is trying to get me to do birthday parties and what not but I haven't put on a real show for strangers yet, but I do plan to. This site has been very helpful also in my short journey also and has given me some resources on what books and DVDs to look for! Thanks for being a part of my start so far!!
