Is there a difference between the book version and the disc version?

I do not believe there is a difference, as Hank Lee published all four hard bound books, and he has also published the CD with all four books on it.
I just discovered it yesterday and will be ordering the CD soon. As I am no longer building my library. Some people like books, and some like the information. This is great, as you can put it on your reader or iPod or whatever and read it as you go. |

I'd tell anyone to go for the books if they can afford them. While it's handy to have them on my computer, where I can access them quickly and use the search function, I'd much rather have the books. There are so many typos and errors on the CD files from where they scanned the books, it's really disgusting.

Well guys
The books were more expensive than the disc set. I can deal with typos as long as there were no edits, or omissions. Thanks for all your help

The CD is full of typos and misspellings; the printed book is not. That's because whomever was in charge of the optical character reading process forgot that you have to proofread what comes out of the computer... it's just a computer and makes innumerable mistakes in the OCR process. However, each reader can proofread and figure out the errors for himself or herself and where one can't, there's always the Magic Café where magicians help magicians, I hear.

Al,
Always get the books instead. The original Disc were poor copies. Font scanning did not work well because the original Rice books are hand lettered. The scan was loaded with errors (not just typos). Those Disc were liquidated for $8-10 set here on The Magic Café. Get the real thing. Harold Rice was an art professor. The books were not the usual print job. (Volume 4 was not actually even part of the set!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Harold Rice's daughter is on The Magic Café. To contact Ruth, her name on The Magic Café is "Rice". She still has loads of his stuff including some books! |

WOW! It sounds like Hank Lee did not bother to check to see how to make the Disc properly.
Today, all you have to do is can the document and directly and it will automatically turn into a PDF file. If it is saved to be able to search, it may or not find every word, but the hand written text will still look as it does in the books. Sounds like they used an optical character recognition program instead of Adobe Acrobate program, as this also has he word find feature without changing the font in any way. Suppossedly, Hank Lee paid a large sum to have the fonts computer generated for book #4. There is really no excuse why the disc version should be this bad with today technology. |

Bill,
If you will talk with the people who actually did Book 4, you will find that a commercial font was used. Using OCR on the first three volumes was a wreck! Plan B was required. To the best of my knowledge, that one is still unavailable. However, the book are. Ruth may still have some volume 3s. She does have the indexes and those are a great help. In 1986 Harold Rice told me that there would never be another volume specifically because of the loss of the hand lettering capacity. Later we lost the real Silk King. I have missed him. He was always helpful and encouraging. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- If you will read carefully, you will find that Volume 4 starts with the next page number but is not even the same name as volumes 1-3. |

Okay, are we talking about the same thing. Hank Lee has all 4 volumes on his CD he is selling. Are you talking about another version from Lybrary.com or something.
There is a Volume 4 Printed by Hank Lee with the material that Harold Rice had assembled thus far, as of his death. It is included on the cd from Hank Lee, per his ad on his site. |

It seems I have miss spoke, I have been informed that Volume 4 does not have the material that Harold Rice accumulated for his pending Volume is not in Hank Lee's version of Volume 4. I assumed wrongly, that Hank Lee made a deal with the Rice estate. I guess this is not the case. Sorry for the wrong information by my statement in the above post.

The Volume IV, referenced above, is technically not part of the Rice series.
The published "Volume IV" was never started, completed, reviewed or authorized by Dad. Indeed, it is called Encyclopedia of Silk Magic and was published by EMS Publishers in 1993. I have a great deal of Dad's material and letters from famous magicians for "Volume IV of the ESM", but, sadly, I have not found an appropriate person to complete it. There are three Volumes in the Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic series. The "Fourth" Volume that is often advertised as part of the Rice's series and/or in the CD referenced above, it is NOT part of Rice's ESM. It has a different author and different publisher. It was written by Mark Trimble after dad died. It is called Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, not Rice's ESM, Volume 4! Dad had quite a good start on his Volume 4 before he became ill. I still have his work on the begining of the "real fourth volume" of Rice's ESM. Before my dad died he sold the rights to publishing the first three volumes of Rice's ESM to Hank Lee. They were reprinted and available from dealers for years. I still have some of dad's ORIGINAL Volume 3 of the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic and the Index for the three volumes for sale at http://www.silkkingmagic.com. if you are interested. I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion. |
