The quest for the perfect set of balls for manipulation with the Cups has long been a quest of mine. There are a lot of parameters I have on my list to make the perfect set.
My good friend Darren Hart has solved the problem. He makes the perfect set of Monkey Balls exclusively for Bob Kohler Magic. There are a lot of features in the set. First, the Monkey Ball wrap creates edges that keep the balls from rolling away from you. Second, the special Black Cord we use kills flashes when you're palming a ball a la John Ramsay Third, the core we use is a high iron content ball bearing so the balls are attracted to magnets, perfect for pocket magnets or holdouts. Fourth, The ball bearings provide a certain mass and weight to the balls which makes for super easy manipulation. Cork balls are tough to hold onto. Not this set! Fifth, the Black Cord we use is easy to hold onto but it's slippery against metal or wood so you can do all of the move effortlessly. Combined with the mass, tough moves like The Galloping Post become child's play. I have a very limited number of sets available. The Black Cord was discontinued by the manufacturer. We have located a small supply. First come, first serve. Here's a link to the product page: https://www.bobkohlermagic.com/view-product.cfm?productid=60 |

No monkeys were harmed in the production of "The Black Monkey Balls". They do however now have much higher voices!

Hey Bob on a serious note, not knowing anthing about "monkey balls" whats the difference in say Skinners baseballs for the cups. Is there a benefit in handling or feel? They look awesome, I just have not every handeled them.

I've been looking for the perfect set of balls for closeup for decades. The set Darren Hart has produced meet and exceed all of my requirements, that's why I'm selling these.
First is the cord. The cord he found is easy to hold onto but when the cord is contacting the metal cups it is slick to the metal. In other words the cord slide like it was lubricated against the cups. This is a big deal for many moves especially the Galloping Post move which is a major necessity in my routine. Second, I want the ball to have mass weight. I hate the cork centers because the balls are harder to control. Third, by using steel ball bearings as the center you get the mass/weight which make them super easy to control and also the are attracted to magnets. This opens up an entire universe of method using pocket holdouts, magnets on holdouts etc. Fourth, the Monkey Ball wrap creates edges that keep the ball from rolling. This combined with the weight really makes things easy for the performer. They are expensive because the materials are expensive and they take a long time to wind. Darren does a great job in the making department. The Monkey Balls come out very tight and even. They look just great. Check out pictures on my web site. http://www.bobkohlermagic.com. We haven't had them for awhile but I can tell you that everybody I've ever shown them too that does the cups has bought at least one set. As far as comparisons to the Skinner or Roger's Baseballs the only thing I like about the baseballs is the look. The cork center is too light weight and the leather can jam occasionally in my experience if it's a humid day. Monkey Ball loads is a good idea but we'r not there yet. Finding a matching cord in a larger size is the big problem. Of course the centers wouldn't be ball bearings! Maybe someday... |
