Yes, 'Do As I Do' is one of classical masterpieces. Many magicians don't recognize how it's a good trick. Maybe it is because it uses two decks.
You can do the effect with one deck. Al Baker is the forerunner of the concept of using only one deck. But Japanese magician Hase created a wondeful presentation of 'Do As I Do' with one deck. His version is one of 10 tricks I perform most. Hideo Kato |

There was a "do as I do" card trick I used to do about 15 years ago. I can't remember how it was performed now though. It used 2 decks and had the same shuffling of the other persons cards like the basic "do as I do", but it was more than just one card was found to be the same. I believe it was a series of 3 or 4 cards were chosen by the spectator and then by the magician and all turned out to be exact.
Does anyone know this one? This was one of the best tricks I ever performed. Everyone was always stunned. |

There's an amazing one deck version of Do as I Do in one of the ebooks that Peter Duffie has put out which - I think it is his "The Card Addict" - has loads of great stuff in there. The name of the trick is called "Make Mine a Double". A spec selects a card for you and a card for him/herself and the 2 are twins - same color, same number/court value but different suit!!
There is one force I can always - ALWAYS - rely on - gravity.

If you like the do as I do effect and your looking for a version that uses just one deck of cards you should check out Balducci as I Balducci by John Carey infact if memory serves correct he actually put it up for free in the secrets section.

Take a look at Wizard Product Review 1.6.11 around 6 mins in, shows Craig performing Balducci as I Balducci, excellent!

Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations series has a TON of great Do As I Do variants that are well worth your time. I agree with nyphoebe that even the original effect still is a STRONG effect. This simple effect has SO many presentational angles and deserves its status as a classic plot in card magic.

The movie "Magic" features Anthony Hopkins performing "Do As I Do" for Ann Margret. Very powerful impact! ;-)

I love this one! As a beginner, it's simple to do, but as I've got better I've added other bits in to make it more entertaining and confusing. I'd like to see it performed by a professional. Any favourites?

Harry Lorayne has a great version of "do as I do" in Close Up Card Magic. It's called, I believe, "Automatic Mindreading". Such a simple, cunning variation yet it will baffle everyone.
