I've found a lot of valuable info about mics, searching on the Café. However when I start looking at the ones for sale, I still having trouble telling one from another.
If anyone could help me that would be excellent I currently have 3 questions: 1. Can someone recommend a good quality wireless hand-held mike, plus a receiver? Preferably a receiver with Diversity and anything else that will reduce the chance of interference. I'm in Australia, so that might limit my selection some what. Good quality sound and durability are important, but of course I don't want to pay more than I have to. I'm currently using the venue's PA, and my show includes music, if it helps. 2. Does anyone know what the legal usable frequencies are in Australia? 3. What does everyone else do about monitors? (in ear, point the speakers at you and risk feedback, or just no monitor and hope the volume's about right?). A few microphones that have caught my eye: Shure SLX24/SM58 Handheld Wireless System, $800 (I've heard good things about this one, but slightly pricey for me). http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=3138 Wireless Microphone PLL UHF 32 Channel Diversity Receiver, $330 (cheap and sounds good, but the fact it's brand-less makes me unsure). http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AM4079 Thanks!! |

I would strongly recommend the Sennheiser Evolution series microphone. Metal body for both the mic & receiver. Unbelievable sound quality for the price.

The shure SLX system is a great solution, I currently use a PGX system wich is a step down from the SLX and for me it is perfect. If you can afford the SLX I would go with that. If not the PGX system is also a great system. I usually try to plug my receiver in at the stage using a snake or floor pocket so the signal does not have to travel very far. Another nice feature with shure is the mic heads are interchangeable, so if down the road you decide you want to go with a better head you can. The SM58 is a great microphone, but I did upgrade mine to a Beta87A. I will say this is not a necessity I actually had the mic head from an old used system I already had.
As far as Sennheiser goes, I would agree they are also great. The show I tour with currently uses 2 of these systems in addition to a shure body pack for a headset mic. When it comes to wireless mics, I only like to use Shure or Sennheiser. Good luck, Fitz

Sennheiser Freeport.
I do have it, it's cheap, sounds well, you can power it with 12V batteries, has low consumption, and, of course, is made by Sennheiser. Less than 150 Eur / Dollars. |

I spent a lot of time researching it, and so far the Sennheiser Evolution series seems like the best choice, as although it's far better than I need right now, I'd prefer to avoid having to purchase another mic anytime soon.
The more I learn the more questions it brings up though. Firstly am I better off with the normal "Cardioid Dynamic", or with the slightly more pricey "Super-Cardioid"? as well as using the microphone in its stand and my hand, I also plan to use it in a mic holder, hanging on my chest - so my main concern is, will the super-cardioid still be able to pick up my voice properly while it's hanging on my chest, or would it be too directional? Assuming it would work all right in that situation, it might be useful to cut down on feedback, since I'll be using music in my act, and might be using an amp as a monitor. Thanks again for the help! |

I would encourage you to not go the economy route on your mic. Feedback and poor sound distracts from your show as much as lack of talent. Great sound isn't noticed!
