Watching the metal guys on the beach when I was a kid led me to believe you were only allowed to do this if you had hairy legs and knobby knees.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this but ...
So what do you do when you're too old to Rock 'n' Roll but too young for the carpet slippers and pipe? Well, you can try music management, the media or a respected career in academia. But if you once played bass in the Rolling Stones, there really is only one obvious career choice: designing and marketing your own-brand metal detector. In the roster of strange career moves for ex-rockers, Bill Wyman is out there in a field of his own, digging it up. The man who quit the Stones in 1993 is now a leading light in the metal detectorist movement, designing and selling his own machines. The Bill Wyman Signature Detector is a 'lightweight and adjustable implement and comes with a free informational DVD', according to the press release for this unlikely piece of rock 'n' roll merchandise. "Metal detecting is not just for anoraks or eccentrics," says Bill. "It's probably the best and the most enjoyable way of learning about our history. "On any garden, country field, footpath, woodlands, beach or moorland, you can find a huge variety of historical objects, all easily located with this high quality metal detector." And don't worry, the Bill Wyman Signature Detector comes with a money-back guarantee, just in case you can't get no satisfaction. http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/......792.html There are some other good where are they now stories at the link above.
Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

Bill is correct- it's a fantastic hobby that not only pays for itself, but offers excercise, fresh air, history, human behaviour, and the thrill of the find.

This has always been somewhat of a fantasy for me but for whatever reason I've never taken it up! May have to do a little research and inform my bride of a NEW potential obsession!
I'm very fortunate, my wife is one in a million and has always encouraged all of my odd ball schemes! Sounds like you're having a blast Rod! MMc |

I'm lovin it, Mickey. Very satisfying and rewarding hobby. This morning I found my first big penny. A 1917 Canadian One Cent piece. The old pennies were about the size of a modern quarter. I gotta tell ya, I've been obsessed with fishing my whole life. The only thing that rivals it for me is being down on one knee at an old church in early october on a crisp fall morning in rural ontario with the colours in full bloom, and plucking a little piece of my nations history from the ground. Today was special, I've been chasing a large cent for a while now. Beautiful coin indeed.

- 1931 penny (George V) - 1887 large cent (Victoria) - 1854 Bank of Upper Canada Half-Penny Wow I can't believe it. Don't get me wrong, I love gold rings (especially at 1300 an ounce), but there's just something about old coins that I love. I'm over the moon- and hungry for more. Rod |

Magicfish what type or model of metal detector would you recommend? I'd love to get back into it.
Use to have one as a kid, a cheap one. Only things I found were bottle caps. What I did find when I was young, without the metal detector of course, was a paleolithic axe-head. It's several thousand years old, I had a museum give it a look over years ago. It's roughly 5" long. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=63......15990091 |

I found loads of stuff as a kid, civil war stuff, but we were conned into turning it all into the museum.

Jimeh, I've tried several different machines. I use Tesoro. I have their top model, but to get you started I highly recommend their Compadre or their Silver uMax. Great, affordable lightweight machines with a really nice tone and a nice feel, and... they work. Next up it would be the Cibola- very good detector from Tesoro as well as their top end target I. D. Machines like the Deleon or the Cortes.
I hope you do start up again, my friend. Be sure to keep me posted. Rod |
