I am trying to buy a rabbit and haven't had too much luck. I would like a dwarf hotot but can't find any breeders or pet stores near me that carries them. I went to two different rescues and both wouldn't let me adopt because I am a magician.

If you could share with me where you bought your rabbit I would greatly appreciate it.

One was from the local humane society and the other was a baby at the Pet Store.

Revmike,

Did the local humane society give you any grief about using the rabbit in your show? Or were you able to keep that info from them?

Paul.... I actually bought mine direct from a breeder. I had to search the web for my breed, then drove to location after talks. The plus factor for us is we use them as an educational aspect in our program, We let the breeder know we were using them in a show, let them know the rabbit will be getting lots of attention (petting time from our fair patrons). We also let then know that we were getting a license from the USDA which means living quarter inspections, and a vet visit each year. These are all legitimate on our end. If this isn't enough info on a good reputation as an animal owner for your animal rescue..... then it may just be an element of these folks not liking magicians that use animals.

I have seen some magicians really mishandle the animals, either by mishandling the rabbit by their method of picking up the rabbit, or worse. I know sometimes I cringe when I see someone produce a dove with a harness, only to yo=yo the dove because they pull to hard or not enough practice. Sad to watch the dove flipping around while the magician tries to get the bird to perch on his hand?????? This could be the view or opinion of these animal rescues. I wonder if they had recieved any animals from magicians.

Have you asked what their issue was? I actually got my breed from Michigan as well direct from the breeder. Try the fair or festivals when they are showing their livestock. Someone in these showings can help you find a breeder. Let me know what you come up with! Just talk to these folks and let them know exactly what you will be doing with these critters. They need to know that you are not just treating these animals as props, but more like family.. once again,,, wish you the best.

Oh ya, check into FFA ( future farmers of america) 4-H as well these are good sources when the fairs and festivals have already gone by.

Thanks for taking the time to post such a long response tropicalillusions. The one rescue called using a rabbit in a magic show "exploitation." The other rescue place figured out I was a magician I assume because of my email address. They wanted a guarantee that I wouldn't use the rabbit I got from them in a show.
You are right that this animal will not just be used as a prop but will be my pet. I plan on working with the bunny and trying to train it. If I am going to put all that time and energy into training an animal why in the world would I mistreat it. Just doesn't make sense to me.
I have searched on google for the breed I want and cannot find any local breeders. The dwarf hotot is hard to come by apparently.
I am similar to you in that the bunny I get will be used in my school assembly reading show so it is for a good cause.Smile

I have always had luck by contacting the local 4H. They always have folks that raise rabbits as part of their training, and you can get just about any breed you want. They are, in some ways, better than breeders as they really care for and love what they do. They are not in it for the money, but will sell to someone who will care for the rabbit.

I have had great luck with Netherland Dwarfs and Holland Lops, and have used both male and females. I believe that their disposition will depend on YOU, and the more you handle and love them, the calmer they are.

I just retired my Holland lop "Snowball" as she is going blind and is 9 years old. I have a set of 5 year old black and white twins that I used for stage shows only to "Transport" from one side of the stage to the other. One is "Black" the other is "Jack", but the audience knows my "ONE" rabbit as "Blackjack". I am now breaking them into my regular show, but will soon be looking for another pure white, blue eyed Lop.

I hope this info helps you to locate the "Bunny" you are looking for.

I was wondering how big is too big for a rabbit. I was surfing the web and found Flemish Rabbits. They are huge! Some tip the scales past 20 pounds. I'm a big man, 6'4" and well let's say full figured. I grew up with the old adage "bigger is better." For someone my size to produce a little two-pound rabbit would look silly I think.
On the other hand (are five more fingers) the size of this rabbit would require a huge production or vanish apparatus. I understand there would be a lot of issues involved having a rabbit this size. And yes, this animal as any of my other pets, would become a member of the family, not just a prop. I'm not planning on running out and buying one now, it was just an idea. What do you think.

The Humane society did question me briefly about being a magician. But I had adopted other animals there, I explained the Rabbit would be well-cared for and be a pet, not a simple "magic prop".

It probably didn't hurt my chances that I happened to be in my clergy collar at the time also. But yes, they did allow me to adopt the rabbit. However, I have also heard from others who have been denied at various places when it is discovered they are magicians.

Paul, Keep searching. you may have to travel a bit to get that special one you are looking for. we are based out of Oklahoma and drove to michigan to pick up from our breeder. Once she heard about the educational program, she even gave us 50 percent off the price. Our rabbit that was registered went for 100 smackers, got her for 50.... . the drive was actually on our way through a road tour, so we really did not go out of our way.

remind your breeder, that you will be treating this critter as family, and will be a spokesperson for great animal care and treatment of pets while presenting your family pet to thousands upon thousands of children each year. reminding them of the importance of taking great care of your personnal pets..

this animal will be getting tons of attention, which is better than setting in a hot cage as a feeder rabbit or getting no attention at all. Go get em

Hi Paul.
Don't tell the breeder that you are a magician. My deceased Lucy was bought from a breeder. She thought I wanted her for a house pet. In fact, that is really is.
Present Lucy was from a pet shop. They didn't care if I was a magician or not.
I thought Michigan had quite a few breeders. Maybe rabbits are not dropping at this time.

I didn't think Michigan had any breeders for dwarf hotot. I just found a site tonight that shows a few in Michigan. I contacted them to see if they currently raise dwarf hotot and look forward to hearing back from them hopefully tomorrow. Thanks all.

I got my current "Trixie" from a pet store -- after Easter. Hard to believe that such an adorable little animal was an Easter bunny reject.

Then I learned that I could actually rescue a full-grown rabbit from a local (ethnic) butcher for less than I paid for the bunny.

I believe I found my rabbit. I am meeting the breeder in Ohio (4.5 hours away) to pick her up on Saturday.

I've got both a Hotot dwarf male and a Netherland dwarf female. This is the second Netherland Dwarf I've had and in my case, the Netherlands were sweeter and easier to work with than the Hotot. It's just a personality thing (in my opinion). Each received similar handling and loving, but the Netherlands just seem to have had better dispositions (in my experience). Put me down as a Netherland dwarf fan.

MagicAL

Oh....found my latest Netherland Dwarf on Craigs list and paid $20 as compared to the $60 to $100 they sell for at the pet stores. Breeders in our area normally sell them for $45 - $75.
