I never realised that this was CMH! I've learned it as linking rubber bands. On a Paul Daniels DVD that I've just bought, he shows it and calls it something like 'that old trick with the rubber bands where they come apart in a tangled mess'
Crazy Mans Handcuffs seems a better name somehow |

Georde,
The video is actually called Classic Renditions Vol.2, Impromptu Rubber Band Magic. It does detail the CMH effect, as well as Cash Ladder (which I always underestimate but get GREAT reactions from) and a single band broken and restored quickie. It's a great video, though nothing really ground-breaking, unfortunately. |

I do CMH with a combo of moves from Jay Sankey, Dan Harlan, and a modification of my own that hides the dirty work from everyone, including folks who know how/when it should happen.
I love doing it for magicians. They know what I am doing and still can catch it. "Out of sight, out of mind" - so if you can hide it for a moment, you can fry them all. BroDavid

I'm with Pete. Think of the classic test, "If God was a magician, what would he do?" Whether that's a valid "test" or not is an entirely different topic (I believe it is), but judged against that test, the idea of doing ANY TRICK with rubber bands makes me laugh. If God did magic of course he wouldn't do anything us magicians do, but I'd think rubber bands would be the last on his list. That's just my opinion, and if rubber band magic works well for you, go for it!

I feel the same about salt. I mean its SALT for goodness sake... the idea of it disappearing out of a hand or changing into a cube makes me laugh.

Well, if you are beleive in such things and you think about it, then God certainly does magic with rubberbands as with everthing else in creation!
I am a very strong proponent of doing amazing things with objects that people are familiar with. I also think magic with objects or within a context that has meaning is very important. CMH is a very strong routine and a nice ice breaker. Lately I have been doing CMH and Garrett Thomas' Ring Thing together (I am working on a transitional RubberRinger/RingBandIt handling as well) I don't really have the repetion problem because both routines are very strong and people really seem to be just blown away. |

Actually I have thought about it and reached a different conclusion.
Rubber through rubber simply doesn't seem that impossible or "perfect" to me. If you want a more magical penetration effect using objects that people are familiar with (I'm a big proponent of that too), link borrowed finger rings. Making metal penetrate through metal, and doing that with borrowed objects (particularly rings, which are such personal objects) is inherently stronger in my view. Larry D. |

I'm going to have to disagree with the "If God were a magician" test. By that test, no magician should never do the Ambitious card trick. Sawing a lady in two makes no sense by that logic. Miser's Dream? ****!
I understand the logic behind the test, but I think it should be used only as a loose guideline. The fact is that CMH is an incredibly powerful routine that has a reputation for eliciting huge reactions. If you carry around rubber bands for the sole purpose of performing this effect, it might be somewhat diminished, though. I get the best reactions when I'm asked to do something impromptu and can borrow the items. |

I usually follow up CMH with pinnacle. My patter being like rubber thru rubber might not magical enough... can I borrow your ring? After pinnacle depends on where I do it I could also going on sankey's ring thru spoon. The best part is all items can be borrowed. But is that overkill for 3 penetration effects in a row?

Mithrius,
I agree 100% with you that no magician would do any trick based on a "literal" interpretation of the test. In fact, in my earlier posting I specifically stated "...If God did magic of course he wouldn't do anything us magicians do...." The test is valuable only as a way of very roughly guiding your thinking, or as you say as a loose guideline. Last, I agree with you that CMH can be more impressive (but I still contend not as impressive as penetration effects using different objects) if you borrow the rubber bands. But since my interest lies in performing professionally versus in casual situations for friends or family, my postings are from that viewpoint and in most professional settings you couldn't rely on a spectator having rubber bands on him or her. For anyone who's interested in performing CMH professionally, I suggest you check out Jon Allen's routine in his "Spectators Don't Exist" video for a very good version of the effect as well as other strong worker material. I am sure that rubber band magic is not for some people.
I will say though, that I have done CMH and CMH with a twist in the restaurant doing walk around magic and the rubber band penetration plays very well. I get a great reactions from doing it while other people hold the band. When I finish by melding the two bands into a single band, people are astonished! I have to admit to even finishing the routine (on occasion) by shooting the last band up my nose. I started doing this just for kids but found that it actually plays quite well for adults as well. I honestly never thought it would, especially because I don't dress or act like someone who would do that. And yet somehow it works. Rubber bands may not play for some people, but my experience shows that they can be impressive.

Larry,
Looking at rubberband magic from a working performer's point of view, I can understand your logic. You alluded to a more impressive penetration effect. What do you get the best reactions with? Jim |

Mithrius (Jim),
The three penetration effects that garner me the strongest reactions are linking finger rings, bottle cap through bottle, and object through quarter (I don't use a cigarette). I believe that what makes these the strongest for me is a combination of factors -- everyday objects are used, borrowed objects are used, all of the objects are hard and known as being impenetrable, and the effects are very direct and visual. Regards, Larry D. |

CMH, Pinnacle followed by my effect "The Joining" which is a perfect ending for any ring and rubber band routine.

Match through match has a 50% success rate for me, however, cmh is great, once I do it on my own hands. doing it on other people's hands is very risky, they usualy see the move a lot easier with this method. I would do some misdirection, like touching their hands, or in the patter to get the move to blow by the, when it is on their hands.

I perfom them regularly when I'm in an "Impromptu" situation with layman. |

I am just learning some rubber band magic to widen my routine, and I have just read where in CMH you can put one band on a spectators fingers, what a great idea just tried it on the wife and it still works well and she is non the wiser, though I feel she may blackmail me later lol
