I have upwards of 600 decks, the vast majority of which are working decks.

Only a small fraction is in the “collectible” category. I am looking for a shelf unit that stores my decks without exposing them to ambient light or direct sunlight – but something that does not look like a clothes dresser.

Suggestions?

"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.

I just lucked out and bought two teak art/drafting storage chests of drawers which I found on Craig's list, for a ridiculous sum. In fact, there was literally a waiting list of people to buy then, but I was lucky enough to get there first! They were just the right depth to hold hundreds of decks of cards as well as other paraphernalia.

This is not quite what I have, but it will give you a good idea of the design:

I am using a set of cassette tape drawers at the moment. You may be able to get some at a thrift store or craigslist.
Weird is part of the job.

If the vast majority of your decks are for tricks and cannot be used as a regular deck, put them in a box of chest so you can get to them easily. If they are ordinary decks, just put them away. That is a lot of decks of cards.

For the collectable decks, put them on display. Build or have built a large box with a glass door, the box sectioned to hold each deck. You can build several smaller boxes or a very large wall covering one.

Just have the glass so it will cut out ultra violet light.

Some collectors consider the joker and Ace of Spades the unique cards in a deck, you could also just display these 2 cards from each deck and store away the others. If done correctly, it would be a very nice looking wall decoration and conversation piece. This you could sandwich between to pieces of plexiglas, with a wood frame.

I was just looking at a gun storage case. The tall wooden ones with the glass doors. They go on sale on craigslist all the time.
The one I looked at was 11 inches deep, and I would need to make shelves for it. Unless I find something else, this is what I might be going with.

I picked up a few plastic store units from the tool department of a Kmart.
Each unit has 18 drawer that will hold 4-6 decks. The drawers are clear, so you can se what's in them.
They're great for organizing all your gaffed decks, etc.

I'm sure Sears, Walmart and organization stores will have these.

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd add that a visit to a sports memorabilia / collectibles shop can turn up a lot of options. I go with cardboard boxes that hold decks perfectly, can be closed against the light, and are just 50 cents each.
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
