I know just using 1 technique is not the way to get your business going but was wondering what one is producing the best results for you.
Believe it or not the local parents magazine is still pulling an average of 3 or more calls a month for me at a price of $100 a month for the ad. I also am starting to try a direct mail to Day Care centers but only did 1 mailing of 75 letters and no results as of yet. Getting ready to do a follow up in 1 week. Don |

Don: I think this thread may be better suited in the Tricky Business section. There you may get more people chiming in with ideas, comments and solutions that may have worked best for them. Wish you all the best.

Handouts handouts handouts at every show. Don't let those kids leave without your handout. Later, when they want to hire you, they will not remember your name or have your number without those handsouts.
Re: direct mail. Normal response is 1 to 2 percent. 75 places is not enough to expect much or any response. Jim
Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

One of you kindly put me onto Terry Parret's ebooks.
One of those ebooks has 41 marketing ideas listed. Nothing earth shattering but a well founded and well thought out list of all the possible avenues. Anyone in marketing will tell you that no singel avenue will work - you need multiple exposures. I have both a marketing degree and numerous marketing qualifications along with years of actual experience and I still bought it. So should you. You can never have enough of this material. If kids have seen you, liked you, and want you at their party....it would be a sad thing if they had no idea how to get hold of you! Solve this problem by creating a MEMORABLE character name, which kids AND adults will remember. Do NOT use your own name, or attempt to make your name become something it isn't. Simply choose/create an entirely new and original name which you feel fits your character. Reinforce your name throughout your show, and expect to be called by your character name frequently. At the end of EVERY show, EVERYONE present knows (and remembers) your name. When clients/kids want to find you, typing your character name into Google should bring your website right to the top. This is probably the MOST important piece of marketing to a kids' entertainer, yet very few take it seriously. Potty |

I agree with the idea of branding your business based on a memorable name, however I take exception to this...
"Do NOT use your own name, or attempt to make your name become something it isn't." Unless of course you can use your own name to create something funny, simple, and memorable. My choice to use a variation of my own name instead of one of the many clever performing names I tried over the years has worked out beautifully. |

Fair point, Mr Pitts. I nearly added a caveat to that effect. Of course, if you happen to be called "Astroflash" to start with, it's probably not a bad idea to at least give that monicker a go.
But I feel that often, trying to hold onto our own reality, and using our own names, somehow takes the magic away from us. Be creative, and become that person you never thought you might be. Or, allow the inner child to become whatever he/she would like to be. Spending time considering your character and persona is, after all, going to dictate how you develop as a performer in the future. If you choose a character that suits you, it's surprising how you can put on the cloak of mystery, and carry your crew along with you for a magical ride. :) |

Dr. Laff and even more, people call me Nigel, which is actually my lead puppets name.
Nearly Normal Magic and Doctor of Laughology are a lot easier to remember (and pronounce and google) than Deutsch. (at least in the USA) A couple of short videos on my site have helped a bit. Having a great show, and folks being able to find you..Priceless. First you have to get their attention..then sneeze you.(see Purple Cow..the book) Danke Harris http://magician.org/member/doctoroflaughology
