Can anyone recomend some good books/dvds on patter, showmanship and routine making for dummies?

You might give "Magic and Showmanship" by Henning Nelms a try. All of those topics are handled in his book, although creating patter will always be a very personal task, I think. I really like this book.

I'm not sure it would help. Dummies generally do very poorly in all those areas regardless of what help they receive. Some of them can't even read!

Patter (monologue) comes from within, you don't want to sound like everybody else out there do you? There are no shortcuts to quality.

If that's the book I'm thinking of (M&S) it was VERY influential on me 30 years ago as a highschool magician.
I've been trying to remember its name! Posted: Sep 7, 2010 11:10am As Al says, ultimately its personal, but there certainly ARE things to learn about timing and verbal misdirection and IMHO you can learn a lot from reading and studying others' acts. Most human learning begins with imitation

I personally find performing for the video camera somehow stifling. I'm better either alone or with an audience.

Hi Owen,
For routining a show, Tarbell Volume 3 has a really good section on that. Jeff |

I find that talking out loud while I practice tricks helps me with the best words, and my comedy timing. Canned patter is as good as Franco American spagetti. YUK
