I like to do close-up magic in bar and walk around situations. I have noticed that a few things I do, or have seen my friends do get BIG reactions. What do you notice that consistently get the BIGGEST reactions?

A simple 2 card transposition or a 2 card monte. Both extremely easy yet play big.

There have been many along the years, though recently I started doing STALKER again, from my booklet SEIS and I get big reactions with this one. I also get big reactions while performing with Maven's Mind's Eye Deck, though I don't do it like he does, my performance is very mobile and there is no need for a surface. Another big reaction getter is silverware bending perfected by lots of practice after watching Gerry & Banachek's Psychokinetic Silverware. Great stuff!!

The three tricks in my repetoire for walkaround that ALWAYS get a big reaction is 3-D Multiplying Rabbits (people tend to like it better then a standard sponge ball routine), symbologic, and the Amazing Jumping Arrow (hot rod). They all floor people.
There are many different ways to cut an apple.

Deep astonishment. I Cut out the wallet version though and I started doing my friend's version that uses advertising cards. It makes more sense in his version.

It depends on where you are.
Walkaround: sponge balls, or anything that happens in their hands c/s/b for example too. Card to mouth, not the folded card to mouth but the other one where it hangs by one corner from your teeth. I do a trick shot production ala Bannon and Apollo Robbins. Bill switches, but I prefer mismade. Bars: Things that are quick and don't need to be thought about too much. Disappearing cigarette. Card under drink. Card on ceiling. Card to mouth. Some coins are good too if the lighting is okay and you can see them. Watch steal. Coin under watch. Oh and Rollover aces (j/k). |

Everything that I do gets a BIG reaction -- because if it doesn't get it, I drop it.

Peters, the question though was which gets the *BIGGEST*!
What always makes me laugh inside is when I do all my wonderful routines and effects I have honed over the years...... then I do a throwaway bit of business with a finger ring jumping from one finger to another and the group goes wild!!!

Anything I do in the spectator’s hands. Sponge Balls, Crazy Man’s Handcuffs (with them holding one of the rubber bands), B’Wave (I let them hold the cards).

I perform weekly at a resturant where I primarily perform mentalism. The effects that tend to get the greatest reactions are my silverwear bending routine. A few Chan Canasta effects (since Canasta never wrote a book concerning his effects, they don't have names), and Phil Goldstien's Desire.

As Pete and Peter have put it. Remove anything that does not get a big reaction. When you do you will find that maybe from show to show something may register more with that particular audience due to the mood of the room, your performance, biorythums, chaos theory or something, but always go for maximum effect.
The trick that gets the most positive comments is my cut and restored routine, the trick that tends to get spontaneous applause is linking rings. I don't consider either stronger than the others. For walking around it would be sponge balls and profesor's nightmare. Again I would not vote one over the other.

I can get them to bleed from the ears with Carlyle's Homing Card (card to pocket) as taught in Card College 2 - which I end with Jay Sankeys '!#%&*!* (I think I spelled that right).
And I've got to say that Chad Long's 'Torn and Kinda Restored' (based on David Williamson's 'Torn and Restored Transposition') from 'The Lost Cheesy NoteBooks Volume Two' just slays - plus it involves 3 spectators, each with a chosen card. GREAT STUFF! |

Any extremely personal effect by Paul Harris gets my vote. Close-up illusions like 'Buck Naked Spectator,' 'The Anything Deck,' or 'Cardian Angel' have always hit another realm of reactions when performed properly.
Also, considering it looks like trick photography, Shoot Ogawa's Ninja Rings routine also scores high in my opinion. I love seeing people's eyes literally jump out of their heads when they see certain phases of the effect. RT

Jon Allen writes (to Pete Biro and I): "Peters, the question though was which gets the *BIGGEST* (reaction)!"
Well, I suppose I could give you the name or names but they wouldn't mean anything to you or anyone else since they are very specifically mine -- the handling, the plot, the routine, the whole megillah! But Frank's post, above, is right: Some nights one thing will get a bigger reaction than another; the next night, the other thing will get the bigger reaction. It all depends on the venue, the audience's mood, my mood, or the phase of the moon for all I know! But Mark Martinez is also correct: anything where the magic occurs in the spectator's hands is the heaviest thing you can do. Bar none. Period. |

Wow! I would say that the biggest reaction I have ever gotten was from wiregram! Its a simple effect using a force! But spectators seem to love it! Plus my friend came up with awesome patter for it which builds it up a lot. I simply love it!
WOO HOO Magic Rocks! Sorry I get kind of excited when I think of reactions from laymen! |
