I called John and explained different tips to him over the phone. He thanked me for giving him different suggestions. They are listed below:
1. Make every explanation a paid video. 2. Just give free explanations to a person if he/she bought so many of them. 3. Make it a forum too. After someone reach so many post, then make the explanations free to that person. 4. Just show easy cheap ones for free. |

Yes. He told me he is not doing it for money, but to help other people learn how to do magic.

And was he under 20 years old?
I guess it is possible that someone just does love magic so much that they want to share everything with everyone. Not smart, not ethical, not always legal (especially when you involve money!) - but possible. I have very glad, though, that no one has learned how to package experience and stagecraft into a YouTube video. Let them learn "tricks". I can order Royal Road through my local library! But to be entertaining and magical? Whole 'nuther story! Ed |

Ed, you hit the nail on the head...
To my knowledge, none of my customers look up magic on YouTube and I recommend Royal Road (about €7.50 in amazon.de) to any budding card man who expresses an interest beyond inquisitiveness. Most people still think you have to be invited to join a secret society to learn the secrets and would be summarily dismissed if you utter one secret in the wrong company. Like minded people search for the same things so we are going to find "exposure" sooner than a layman. Ignore it...

This site is a example of why magic is being destroyed.
I am sure Magic John is a magician who could not make a living by performing. So he sold out to profit himself. It's really sad to see how many people will use this leaning idea to profit their own pocket. The ethics of the human condition is upsetting. |

I don't think showing the "easy cheap ones for free" would work any better, as it is all relative. A Svengali deck is easy and cheap - should we expose that? I think it should be all or nothing (or in this case, nothing at all...as in, remove the site.)

What rights do you have once your purchase an item? Think about it and get back to me. Then before you get back to me look at the law. You may not be so happy.
As for the idea that it takes years to learn things they are just exposing for free let me say that if you do things that take years to learn, nobody can expose them and ruin your day. Even after exposure it is not going to hurt you that badly for that long. You are making it a much larger problem than it really is. If a performing magician wants to keep secrets they simply don't publish them. Case in point try to find Mac Kings rope routine in print somewhere. YOU CAN'T! That is because Mac is smart. If you publish it and it ends up on the internet life goes on. Ask the music industry about the experience with Napster. Get over it. I am not saying people should expose, I am saying it is nothing to cry about. It has been happening for a LONG time. Concentrate on booking your shows and making people happy and forget the fools who feel the need to do this nonsense. The fact is that of the 40,000 members here someone is buying things because they saw this site on this thread. You have helped them by publishing and effectively advertising for him. You can't stop these fools. (By fools I refer to those putting up sites like that.) Why draw attention to them? My sister used to tease me. Oh I yelled and told mom and dad, but found out that the only fun in teasing me was getting the reaction. Once that stopped, so did the teasing. These guys will fade into the woodwork. Just let them.

Mike, I would say that you do a fine job doing your shows and making a living. Don't let one fool get under your skin. It is not worth it.

Hey um ... go to any library, EVERY SECRET TO A "TRICK" CAN BE FOUND FOR FREE!!!! 99% of the so called secrets in magic are for sale, so there are no secrets EXCEPT ......... The real secret of magic lies in the performance. ~ David Copperfield Learn to perform, learn to entertain, then you don't need to depend on "tricks" and won't care about exposure. Go ahead, expose every prop or move I use. I don't have to care because I entertain. I suggest you stop worrying about "exposure" and learn to be an entertainer. Take the time you fret about exposure and learn to entertain, take an acting class, book time with Joanie Spina, read all the books Sharpe wrote (or Houdin, Nelms, Ortiz, "Our Magic"), actually rehearse with someone who can help you You'll be a better person and entertainer for it or you can complain about it here (or elsewhere) and be no better
