Hi Everyone,
I just got a gig working in a local chain restaurant(Outback)on Friday and it's my first time doing restaurant magic can eveyone please help me I'm very nervous. Can you please give me some great clean one-liners to use and how to walk up to a table cold(yes the owner did ask me to walk around) and just any other tips. Thanks so much |

If you are nervous that is normal. Since you are hired to be there don't be afraid to let them know that. As Jay Sankey suggests, let them know who you are and what you plan to do. As an example:
"My name is Wonderbob and the management has asked to come around and force everybody to have a good time. I am the entertainment and just want to show you a quick trick." This tells them who you are, that the management asked you to be there, and that you are not going to take much of there time. Once you are up in running with your first effect by the time you end it you will be able to tell if they want more or want to get back to their conversation. Do something hard hitting and brief for your first effect as you don't want to be doing a five minute long routine that could be interrupted with the food coming. Good luck. -Paul

The line I used tonight(which came out of nowhere)that worked well- Hi,my name is Mike & I'm not here to sell you insurance,I'm going to do some magic for you. Unless you want to buy some insurance,I do sell insurance part time.
It got a good laugh every time I used it tonight. I would say to find an introduction your comfortable with, establish who you are & that your not some nut job walking around bothering people.Be sure to mention that your hired by the restaurant & the entertainment your providing is free of charge. It really is trial & error to figure out what works for you,I would suggest using the search engine here & looking up the subject. You will find a lot of ideas. Just keep at it Mike |

Good luck and only use lines that fit your style!
As Mike & Paul have noted, remember that you are there to do a job - this in itself should help with confidence. As James Prince commented (in his restaurant DVDs), a waiter does not feel bad offering a menu / asking if the table are ready to order (or something like that). I other words, make your approach and if the table say no thank you, then no biggie, be polite and move on. Again, good luck and enjoy! Charlie |

If you ask because of the gambling aspect, there are some great monte tricks that are not gambling related.
A good monte trick is easy to follow, can be done in the hands... |

I would say monte tricks are fine as long as you are not trying to persuade people to actually gamble.

My personal feeling is, if they really feel the need to tip you (because you left them with the impression that you truly control all the elements of the universe) then, accept the tip as gratiously as possible. If it is a problem, because of some moral dilemma, accept the tip and hand same off to the waitperson who's table it was (or split the tip with them). Believe me, once the waitstaff thinks that they are getting a "cut" from you, you will probably never have to approach a table cold again. (This is all within the realm that the restaurant is paying you well to begin with.) Just a thought. (And it has worked for me!)

When tipped I like to say "Much appreciated but not expected. Thank you." This lets them know everything I want them to know about tipping me. The last thing I want is people not wanting to come in on the night I work because they don't want to have to tip another person. Better to have them come in and not tip me than not at all. If people are coming in to see me I look at it as job security.

I find the best approach for myself is really to introduce myself upfront as a magician and ask if they would like to see some magic.
But it really depends on the type of environment you are performing at. In a classy setting this will be really effective, but in a more rowdy environment, maybe a more assertive introduction will be better. |

But the feedback was great so I think he will have me back. Some tricks I did was Daryl’s cup and ball, the cartoon deck (kids loved that one), I did some sponge balls and sponge rabbits and I did a bunch of other tricks. |
