Marlo was so intensively working on card manipulation and card routines that he may have found by himself what others could have found before and took credit for without even knowing it (as we all do sometimes...). He stays a genius on that matter.
Aiming to become the only magician in the world that has ever produced the lost socks back from the dryer...

I know this is an old topic, but I wanted to revive it a bit since it took so long to search (So many people like David Regal pronounce it 'aftus' instead of 'atfus'). Regal uses it a lot (eg 'For Marlo' or 'Cheating'). Marlo himself wrote a whole book on card switches btw. I wondered if there was any recent material using this switch. Lynn

Could it be that Marlo created a lot of stuff and other magicians "tweaked" some of his moves and then said he stole from them?

Nothing was published in the "New Tops" in 1956 by Ed Marlo or by anyone, for that matter . . . as it didn't exist. For the ATFUS, FUFU, and Anytime FUFU,you can refer to M.I.N.T. Volume One, pages 51 - 83. That covers the ATFUS ("Atfus/Mental Reverse III" from the April, 1964 New Tops) and related face-up switches and effects. |

I'm not an admirer of Marlo's ethics when it comes to his crediting.
However, for ATFUS, if he was inspired by the Elmsley move, he developed it so far, the only real similarity is that the switched out card ends up face up under the top card of the pack. The mechanics of how to get there are completely different. If you want to make your own comparison, the Elmsley trick is in Pentagram, not Pabular. And also in the Collected Works. |

Note: I revived this forum to find out if the ATFUS move has been featured in more recent magic effects! I know that David Regal uses it frequently, and wondered about other effects. Lynn

It's true, I didn't know Ed Marlo. But I've read the letters in the Zarrow Book. And read the various letters about Oscar Pladek's pop up move. To name but two approaches to crediting.
But he also came up with plenty of great magic. On the original question; there is a great trick using ATFUS in the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings, a handling of the Hofzinser ace problem. |
