Donna and I went to the local Scottish Games last week, and I finally got to try haggis. Or, more likely, a version thereof. Made me want to check out a Burns Supper sometime.

Are you a displaced Glaswegian, Nosher?

My wife watches George Lopez and he interviewed a Scot who explained what Haggis was. Lopez then described Menudo to them and it sickened the poor Scottish dude and his Asian wife.

No John,
I was over there for 6 months last year and loved Glasgow and Glaswegians.
When I was a backpacking kid I saved an American guy from two Glaswegian housepainters who thought that his inability to understand what they said was him taking the **ss. Heated for a while but settled with beers and me as translator.

On our tenth wedding anniversary my wife and I stayed (amongst other places) at a bed-and-breakfast in Santa Barbara known as the Cheshire Cat; the manager/chef there was Glaswegian: Billy Sims. It was a couple of days before Christmas, so we were the only guests. One evening after dinner we were on the back porch chatting with Billy for about an hour. Every five minutes or so my wife would look at me and ask, "What did he say?"; I, too, had to translate Glaswegian Scottish into American English.

The rest of the weekend was similar, though not every five minutes.

I recently attended a Heavy Athletics seminar by a Scottish Highland Games champion. He had a heavy accent. It was great. He was also the announcer at the Games the next day. You think it's hard to understand that accent normally, try it through a crackly PA system. He never did pronounce my name anywhere near correctly.
The Scots accent with a lisp is the best accent.

A couple of years ago I was at the barn where we keep our horses when I got a call on my cell phone. It was a job interview. The gentleman interviewing me was Scottish, living in Atlanta, GA. A couple of minutes into the interview my wife walked up to me to hand me the lead rope for one of the horses (Lacey, who is blind): she was cleaning Lacey's stall.

So, I'm standing there, holding onto a blind horse, talking on a cell phone (with a very poor connection), being interviewed for a job by a Scotsman from Atlanta with a very heavy accent.

After about twenty minutes he said, "Well, I ought to let you get back to what you were doing." I told him that I was fine; if he continued to interview me, I didn't have to clean horse stalls!

GREAT cartoon Critter, I've gotta e mail that to my Step Dad who's a Scot! I'm Scot by heritage but I'm quite sure there has been a bit of blood dilution over the years (although my dearly departed G-Father swore we were pure)! LOL
Even if that were the case, I screwed it all up by marrying a Portuguese/Italian making our children PortuWopScot!

I'm Irish-Norwegian, isn't that what a Scot is? Smile
We have two Scottish terriers so I'm thinking of having a t-shirt made that says "I'm not Scottish but my dog is."

I had a clerk from Scotland who had an extremely thick accent and when he drank forget it. He did have what he called "Sunday Scottish" where he would really slow down and work to be clear when talking to women. He, to this day, believes that I understand every word he says. I have no idea I just agree.
