Singers or not, it seems the goal is to find the one act that the producers feel is the most marketable for the planned venues. This doesn't equate necessarily to the most talented, regardless of the show's name.
There may be a lot to gossip about regarding who gets voted off, etc., but personally, I like to watch the show, because I like to watch variety entertainment. If the acts choose to enter a contest, they essentially commit to being judged. Fairness may or may not be part of it, and judges are what they are. Poppycock was/is extremely talented and has tremendous artistic vision. I think he could put together a very impressive show. I'd expect he has performance talents that go beyond opera, even if that was his focus. I was however, a bit disappointed and embarrassed by his less than gracious exit when he was voted off. Ruben Studdard is still high profile around here, but that's because he is from here. I'm sure his career was helped by American Idol, but he did end up living in the shadow of Clay Aiken. Telephone votes are not a good indicator of who gets the gigs and the contracts. I think Ruben's mom considers herself to be as much a star as her son. She went from 2nd grade school teacher at my son's school, to driving a really big expensive car that still has a "IDOL MOM" car tag (license plate for non-southerners). Fighting Gravity has a super concept. I think they are just beginning to explore the variety possible with their characters. They have put the players into a number of different playlets, but they have yet to evolve the characters. Think Blue Man Group and how even virtually identical characters by appearance have such differing and recognizable personalities. Jackie Evancho is a precious little child with an amazing talent. I hope she is able to retain enough normalcy in her childhood. Her brother may very well be that constant she needs. (Never trusts moms and dads not to be bucking for their own reality show. Ha!) Jackie is so incredibly rehearsed, that even her little speeches came across as canned. Same thing happens in beauty pageants, which are very popular with children... probably more than they should be. But she broke character many times, and showed some honest 10 year old reactions. She seems to be a very normal little girl, although she can turn it on for the camera and the microphone. Not sure if anyone else caught it, but her duet partner, Sarah Brightman subtly hinted at a bit of caution. I was not sure if this alluded to the future fame, or was a bit of a warning about preserving her voice. It did seem to indicate that some people are really looking out for her best interests. She may not be ready to handle a full show herself at this time, and I'm sure there will be enough excitement in her life from the "best of AGT" tour.

I'm friends with one of Clay Aikens confidants and she would provide updates on his career and how his mother and she wanted to smack him for being an odd guy (she was friends with his mom and he kind of likes talking to her). Let me tell you, while he wasn't a superstar he, Clay, was making a lot more money and playing bigger shows that Ruben ever did.
That being said my friends sister who was number five in her year likely sold as many albums as I did and I never put out an album! I think who ever is your agent has a lot to do with your success. |

Prince Poppycock had every reason to be upset.
Peirs didn't buzz him because he was performing badly, The Prince was singing very well and just approaching the end of the song that every male Opera singer dreams of singing in front of an audience and every Opera fan (and others) look forward to hearing, and then just to be perverse, and because Poppycock didn't do just what Peirs wanted him to do (or more likely to sabotage the Prince who was doing very well) Piers buzzes him. I regret not being allowed to see the performance in total. I was totally into the performance and totally angry and frustrated to see it marred in such a mean spirited way. Prince Poppycock never said he was a clown. I think he is an Art Person with a flamboyant sense of whimsey. It's lucky for us that our funniest Magicians are not admonished (generally) for their Magical skill nor disallowed from being artistic, if they so choose. I look forward to Prince Poppycock's Show, which I'm sure will come to pass. - Mary Mowder |

For the record, I think Prince Poppycock was one of the most creative and talented acts this season. I enjoyed every performance he gave.
Yes, I disagree with what Piers did to Poppycock, as I disagree with what I've seen him do with other contestants. When the contestants' fate relies on the judges' votes, the buzzer may be appropriate. When the vote is given to the people, the buzzer is an unfair swaying mechanism. Piers is basically an elitist horse's ass. That being said, it was not a smart move on Poppycock's part to adopt the defensive stance that he did, at the point he was voted off the show. Anything he said immediately after his buzzed performance was totally legitimate. That was his time. When the final four were being voted on or off, he should have by then exhibited a more dignified manner. Instead, he chose to go head to head with the "bad" judge, and he set himself up to be bitten. Piers did just that. It was an awkward moment that further made Piers looks like and ass, but also made Poppycock look like a sore loser. To Santa... There is no doubt that Clay eclipsed Ruben. Clay was definitely more commercial, and that's not a bad thing. It allows him to sell to a wider range of listeners, and the pop music market is definitely where a lot of the money is. Ruben has his market, albeit smaller and more defined. Correct on the agent comment. I can see many of the acts that voted out well before the end, developing healthy careers, and I'm sure others finishing near the top fizzling out in time.

Dear GDW,
Oh yea, Kevin James. Good reminder that the judges can be idiots. Basically, I guess I have a problem with the whole buzzer thing. It's very rude and the last thing our society or children should think is OK. If the act is bad, then they shouldn't put them on. Otherwise they should give the act the full 90 seconds (not too much to ask) and then make their remarks and let the people vote. "You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one." - Mary Mowder |

I don't feel that Prince Poppycock was out of line. When Nick asked how he felt, he commented that Peirs "Looks like he's been sucking a lemon." He called him a sourpuss in Poppycock fashion, Howie and Sharon agreed, as did most of the live crowd that night. I think his performance that night cost him more votes than his reaction.
Though Peirs was wrong in buzzing, his analysis of the performance was dead on. Poppycock is at his best when he's over-the-top, flamboyant and campy. Certainly the costumes were grandiose, but the rest looked like something I'd see on PBS when they broadcast opera from the Met - and that's not what we've come to see from him. Still, he didn't deserve to be buzzed, or 4th. |

I think the statement that Michael Baker had a problem with was the Horses a** comment at the very end after Poppycock had been placed 4th. Not the best thing to have said then and not said very clearly either. I wish he hadn't said it but I certainly understand his feelings.

I had Poppycock fourth and fighting gravity third with the winner been a toss up.
I'm glad for Michael Grimm. |

Michael sounds exactly like Bill Medley of the richous brothers did when he did that song 45 years ago.

I agree but a little girl stuck in Vegas? It seemed like a sad childhood to me no amount of money is worth it.
