Does anyone here have any experience performing at halftime during professional sporting events or during minor league sporting events? I have a few questions I like to ask about this market and these types of events.

I did a couple of half-times for college basketball games in the early 90s. I was not paid for those.

I've done basketball, baseball, and hockey games. The minor league baseball, and the professional basketball games were a pleasant experience, but I was hip checked, and elbowed in the mid section at the Flyers games. Do a hockey game at your own risk.

I too recently did halftime event at a basketball game. It was a fluke thing in the sense that I didn't market to get it, it fell into my lap as a result of someone that knew someone, who knew someone who saw me and just ranted and raved about how perfect my show would be for NBA games at halftime and even possible pregame festivities. (the person who booked me on this is not in the position of being able to help me and has since moved away and left the profession).
Now let me preface this by saying this is not a magic act or anything to do with magic, mentalism, hypnosis or any of the related mystery arts. While it's also not music it is a very visual, interactive form of entertainment that plays with the masses at one time. The only other act I know of that does this market regularly is the quick change couple from last season on America's Got Talent, and although I've spoken to them previously I haven't been able to reach them regarding my questions, which is why I thought I'd try here. I've booked many special markets over the past 30 years but this is a new one for me, and I do know sports organization often have a different structure than some other conventional markets. My question is regarding a way of trying to enter this market aggressively. Are most of these booked through agencies, the league or the individual teams themselves? What is the title of the contact representative? And also of course I'm trying to learn more about the expected pay range for these type of appearances. I have no problem performing nationally as I a quite used to it, and spending decent money to properly enter this market is also not a problem (for top quality, pro level materials and support). I feel what I charged for my performance earlier this year was possibly less than the going rate which if I am going to continue to pursue, I want to know more specifics. The AFT couple did give me some great info including their pricing, but I'm sure it was skewed as they were just riding the wave of popularity from being on the show and a full summer or national interest and exposure. Any help from those with real experience would be appreciated. |

In all the cases of me entertaining at sporting events I was called by the teams promotions dapartment who googled "magician Philadelphia" and hired me for the first game of the season, or a special event during the season.

Congratulations doing a performance at half time is quite an honor. I was hired to do walk around magic half way between the snack bar, and the men's room, a totally different kinda gig.

The department that usually hires this kind of entertainment is called Game Operations. Your probably looking for the manager or director, but anyone in the department can usually help you. They work together as a team. This is a good market and from what you said about your act you are what they are looking for.
From my experience... They want an act that can setup in one minute or less on the court. (They will help you set your stuff.) A visual family friendly WOW type of act that lasts a full 5 minutes strong! You will then have another minute to strike your show. (again they can help) I worked for the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and the Arizona Diamondbacks for 2 years each as pregame entertainment. I did close-up magic in the plaza's or fan zone. My managers were the same people that run the show, and any sporting event is a show. They encouraged me to develop a half time act but as a teenager it was over my head and out of my budget. I think they also have conferences you may be able to showcase at... Good luck, Fitz

This is exactly what I had expected and was thinking. Thank you so much, and all of you others as well. I understand this is a very niche market, but I think it could be prime for the offering I am working on.

Here you have to pay the team in order to perform. Its either pay them or buy tickets to sell or giveaway.
