Hello,
My name is Chris, I'm from central Kentucky. I'm really new to the world of magic and illusions!! I mean like really new!!! The reason I'm here is to learn more about illusions. So here is my first question, When I was young my parents took me to Bush Gardens in Williamsburg, Virgina. While there, we saw a show about Merlin or Nastradomus. That me and a friend took part in. My friend broke the wand of a wizard, that she couldn't fix. So I was placed in a (I think they are called stocks) with my head and hands. then an apple was placed just below my throat in another opening. He then shoved a blade through the stocks slicing the apple into but leaving me intact, thank God!!! That was over 15 years ago and I have really never for got about it. So the other day, I showed my kids a trick. In which I turned water into ice instanly in a cup. There faces lite up like a christmas tree. I thought how much fun it would be if I could show then the illusion I mentioned above... So can any one point me in the right direction. I would like to find a set of plans, free would be best, but I will pay too. Thank you very much for your time! |

Dear garagmonster_502,
Think how much more fun it would be for your children and you if you undertook Magic as a long time pursuit. You know you have an interest and you know your children love it. Many people would like answers to their fleeting Magic questions but this site is for people who are seriously interested in Magic. If that is your interest, you are welcome, but I wouldn't expect the answer to that question to be handed out easily. The people who have the most experience here (and are therefore most apt to have the answer you seek) also have a vested interest in protecting Magic secrets from the casually interested or merely curious. So garagemonster_502, if you're with us for the long haul, have faith that eventually you will be led to the stock effect you mentioned. In the meantime try some less involved effects to start with. If you start the kids out on illusions they will (and you will) miss out on a lot of fun and be jaded for some great Magic along the path. I'd suggest a Library or your local Magic Shop (a real shop is best for beginners because the owner can help lead you to appropriate beginner Magic). We were all beginners once and the Café is kind to beginners. - Mary Mowder |

I'm sorry my post did come off a little short, but I would love to learn some card tricks and other things. Something easy to start out with! Can anyone recommend any or any good books??

Try Mark Wilsons Course in Magic, very good book. Go to your local library, they usually have some books on magic. By the way, what part of Kentucky are you from? I also am from central Ky. I perform at Beechbend park in Bowling Green Ky.

I definitely suggest picking up the Mark Wilson book as it's a great place to start. There are also two newer books you may want to take a peek at:
- Magic: The Complete Course by Joshua Jay - Knack Magic Tricks by Richard Kaufman These three books should keep you busy for quite sometime and won't break the bank. |

You may want to contact some of the guys in I.B.M. Ring 198 - I'm sure they'd be happy to help you get started, and they have some really nice and talented folks in that club.
Good Luck.

While self working tricks from gimmicked decks seem easy and worthwhile at first. start with a regular deck of cards, and you will be able to do magic anywhere. This doesn't mean you need to learn a lot of knuckle busting maneuvers either. You can do a lot of stuff with very mild sleights, and good presentation.
Don't discount things like salt or sugar vanishes using a TT or bill switches etc. Also, go for things that people relate to, like getting a hopping half, which packs small and plays big. (although it might be too pricey to start out with about $50) Also a rope trick or two, professors nightmare is a great effect and not hard to learn. I was just watching a DVD from Jim Pace, and reminded how some effects are so darned simple but play so darned big. Don't discount a trick just because it isn't hard to do. Look at the impact it has on an audience. But above all, don't be afraid to practice. Practice in a mirror is the best way to learn and critique yourself. Or video yourself, and watch it. You will be amazed at what you will get caught with, and what you can get away with. Another bit of advice.... Do not pester your family with pick a card effects, or any other magic until you have gotten it down good. I thought it would great to use them as my practice audience, and after a while, they actually began to resent my magic. So treat them as you most important audience and give them your best. Use strangers as your training ground. You will never see most of them again anyway, so who cares. Doctor Cognos
