I'm John, a 29 year old nerd out in Silicon Valley where I've always lived. I started with magic when I was 10, and started juggling about the same time. Juggling-wise, I became proficient in 3-ball techniques, clubs (torches are my fav), and the Diablo. And because of my locale, the majority of my collaborative juggling practice took place at the original Klutz store in Palo Alto. I miss that place dearly... Anyway, looking back at my magic, I now see that I relied too heavily on gimmicks and props. Not through and through, I was a demon at 3-card monte, but I now look at my rising card deck with a bit of disdain. IMHO, Gaffs and gimmicks are a fine place to start, and no doubt have their place in any close-up act, but I now feel I have done a bit of a disservice to myself by not learning a proper foundation of slights. Build not your house of magic on a slate of sand.
Admittedly, I have been on hiatus from magic for several years, wisked away by life and responsibility. But March of 2010 graced me with a daughter who has sparked a renewed desire to conjure, and conjure well. Who can deny the worth of their own child's smile, laughter and bewilderment! So, I have finally picked up a copy of the Erdnase "bible," as well as the Allan Ackerman DVD set to accompany it (yes, I am aware that Ackerman strays from the Erdnase text from time to time, but he does mention he would do so on disc 1). These two items seem a fine starting point for my magic rebirth, but I'm all ears for any other suggestions. Apart from all that history stuff, I'm glad to be a new member! A tip o' the hat to you all! |

Hi John.
I used to live in San Jose many years ago. I went to Steve Dawson's Magic Touch Shop in Milpitas. I miss that place too. I'm a juggling wanna be. Welcome to the Café. - Mary Mowder |

Hey Mary. Ah yes, the Magic Touch. The nostalgia is thick. I spent countless hours there long ago peering into cases and taking in the demos. Now it's near impossible to find a quality shop nearby. I head over to Misdirections in San Francisco sometimes, but I rarely feel like braving the traffic and parking.
Thanks for the welcome, you guys! |

I wish I could juggle, not because I have any use for it in my show, because it's cool. It's just such a complicated art with all the throwing and catching. It's like, juggling.
Welcome and enjoy the Café. ...a wanna be juggler.

@Ken - Thanks, Ken. I imagine the Café is going to be an amazing resource. The questions will be countless once I get myself back up to speed. I just have to remember to work through the frustration of not getting things right the first time, or the second time, or the third...
@Chad - You should give it a shot! There's something very zen about being able to juggle. I've put an end to some hard days by just relaxing alone in silence and juggling. Too much information, moving on. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify something from my OP. I think I came off a bit arrogant about gimmicks and that wasn't my intention. So much great magic requires a little extra helping hand, in whatever form that is. I only meant to say that I really want to learn the classic methods before moving to heavily in the gimmick direction. Improve my finger dexterity, hone my patter skills, be aware of eye contact. So, sorry if I left a bad taste in anyone's mouth. My apologies. |
