Loved this effect! What a cool idea. Extremely visual, but plays best for a small group (4 or less people) in my opinion for its angle sensitivity. Definitely execute a switch if you plan on handing it out.

I bought a Bell bucket for miser's dream from Hank Lee. $40 plus shipping.
When I got it, it still had the price tag from Bed and Bath $9.95. James

Hank's boys stiffed me 12 years ago on a $25 nonworking trick, and I haven't spent a dime or a second with them since. Gives me pleasure to put the loot in Hocus-Pocus's pocket. Honest responses and good customer servicing; the customer is worth more than the buck they're carrying.

Recently, I bought some Vectra thread from Hank Lee. Well, it was obviously NOT Vectra. Just regular nylon wooly. Sad.
I also contacted him about Flashlight fun. I have one that is out of batteries. He told me they don't refurbish the old models any more and I needed to upgrade to the new model for $81. I think I will just buy Spellbinder's pdf for $5 and make my own for $10 This Little Light of Mine! http://www.magicnook.com/WizJournal/WJ-11ALL.htm How do dealers like this stay in business. It's a shame really. It's bad enough we have to deal with all the hyping, false ads, rip-offs and downright junk that is produced by some creators. And now we have to deal with the dealers who also try and rip us off.

$ave your money.
Unless I got a defective gimmick, it does not fold up well near the end. Atleast I only threw away $20! The beginning is very visual; however, the last "W", does not do what it should leaving it UNANGLE proof. Perhaps a magnet? |

TrickyEric New user 80 Posts |
JSBLOOM That must be defective. I have performed it with no angle issues (for one person at a time). I'm not sure how a magnet would help that situation. Best of luck.

Not optimal for any performing situation.......not recommended. It disappoints me to write this because this has so much potential, but was released onto the market before it was completely finished.

My gimmick was a bit off, so It did not pass the wife test. I could only see this working if I wore snow gloves.
I have tried to realign the gimmick so that you are better but it did not work and the Kartis Bill Change is in the drawer. So I wait for my Extreme Burn 2.0 Mike

I see this as a perfect transition into extreme burn! Imagine after a few tricks..
Me: "Do you have a dollar bill by any chance?" Spec: "Sure" (hands me the dollar and I pocket it) Me: "Thanks for the tip!" (Wait for everyone to stop laughing Then pull out "their" dollar bill) Right before handing it back, do the Kartis change (from a dollar bill to a slip of paper) Spec: "Hey! That's just a piece of paper! I want my dollar back!" You: "How about I give you five pieces of paper!!" Then grab out your Extreme Burn. Do Extreme Burn, and let them have back one of the dollar bills! I gotta get this jsut to try out this idea. |

I get the sense that they think it's a cool gimmick, but nothing more, which is not very magical. |

I can't understand why something would be released when it's not really roadworthy.
If you're 'magically' making money from paper it needs to be appreciated that most people will likely want to handle the notes and at the very least you need to get rid of the paper you started with. Is there no way this could have been put on a pull? |

Got it yesterday, played with it, and will never use it again. (1) As Eric indicated, there is no way to "angle proof" the thing, (2) If the lighting is bad, the gimmick is obvious not only from the back, but also in front, (3) the DVD-demonstrated handling is very artificial, clumsy even (4) It absolutely can't be handed out and it isn't worth it, given #1, #2 and #3 above to even try to switch the thing. I also don't think the gimmick is robust so it won't last very long.
I too thought about using it with EB before I purchased it but IMO it would simply weaken a terrific, unexpected effect (EB). Since you can hand out the EB bills (version 2.0) if you want to, or much more often, in my experience, simply count them openly for the spectator, using Kartis in conjunction with EB (as a prelude) will only make the observer want to look even more closely at the EB bills, which in an EB-only setting, they seem too shocked to want to do that. I agree that Kartis looks amazing in the videos and that's why I bought it. Turns out that it is genuinely unbelievable and so, again I learn, do not purchase something simply because the camera makes it look good. I'm sorry to have had a bad experience and I'm very disappointed because I wanted it to be a phenomenal new idea. |

Glad you found a way to make this work that no-one else seems to have found Howard. Not even Eric Jones!
Shame you don't seem to have a grasp of paragraphs though or correct capitalisation. It makes your posts difficult to read. Which is a good thing as they're just plain rude. |

Thank you Russell, I enjoyed your comments. As you pointed out, Eric (whom I greatly admire) didn't make the thing work. I suspect that, as Howard steadfastly maintains, if Eric (or even you or I) tried hard enough, we could probably deduce a somewhat acceptable result. After all, this isn't neuroscience.
But here's the point with respect to magic (and other things) that can be often established...THERE IS A COST-BENEFIT RELATIONSHIP TO WORKING ON A TRICK. The cost is some money (in this case, already, regrettably spent) and more importantly, time. Howard wants me to dedicate weeks at my kitchen table in order to get it right. Okay, so then I ask myself, what is the benefit? Only the audience/spectator can properly assess that...I'm performing magic (it is a performing art after all, isn't it) for lay people's amusement, enjoyment and amazement, in that order, and not for myself in a mirror somewhere, or "back in the woods." As a performer, I have a responsibility to be a proxy for the "real people" that graciously agree to witness this stuff. Using this standard, the Kartis bill change, flat-out, doesn't cut it. Without rehashing all the glaringly obvious defects already detailed about the bill change, if I want to do something highly entertaining with money, then proven, meticulously developed, well thought-out, extremely flexible innovations like Extreme Burn (among others) are vastly superior to this effect, which, even if it worked perfectly, is one-shot, eye-candy at best. Finally, there is a larger, more important ethical issue here. In my opinion, there is no way that the developer/publisher thoroughly work-shopped this trick...if they did, they wouldn't have released it as is. That behavior diminishes the efforts of others, like Eric, who bust their butts to deliver high quality material. For example, I worked on "Audio" for days, and I eventually abandoned it because I couldn't get it just right, my pants aren't baggy enough, I use smaller coins, the environments that I work in are too noisy, whatever. But that DVD is itself a miracle...I play it just to listen to the wonderful music, watch Eric perform, and it is more than worth the 20 bucks that I paid. The other element is that since most magic is purchased online, I believe that my dealers have a responsibility to thoroughly test products before they offer them for sale...I have taken up this subject with my NYC source, and I pointed out that their Kartis product description is identical to several other major suppliers, and is taken directly from the publisher. As is customary, you can't ask for your money back after you buy an effect, so I believe that reputable dealers have to be very judicious about what they offer their customers. If I had seen Kartis done in real-time, at their bricks-and-mortar emporium, I would immediately have passed, even without knowing all the "secrets." So that's about all I will ever have to say on this subject. Thank you very much for being sensible. |
