Just thought I'd let you know that Harry's book has arrived (thanks for the signature Harry!) as well as the Double Take DVD, and I've been practicing my basic double lift and the double under-cut relentlessly.
I showed my wife a basic double-undercut to double-lift card reversal and she was amazed. When I was a kid I was focused mostly on coins... but I'm really getting hooked on cards now that my initial stumbling blocks have been overcome. Thanks again guys for all the pointers and advice.

I was the same way.
Too bad I was 44 years old before I decided to get over my stumbling blocks. (49 now). Oh well, can't stop me now. My wife RUNS away when I approach her with anything that remotely looks like a deck of cards.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Cyberqat, you may find it interesting that the one slight that took me the longest to master was a convincing double lift. Welcome to the pasteboards
I am not sorry to say that it is likely a lifelong experience to do card magic! Your coin work may help you in many ways you don't expect Michael |

Yes cards are definitely great once you can get them down. just keep practicing those doubles!!!!! I would also start working on some flourishes.......springing cards, fanning a deck, one-handed cuts, and so on.

Cyberqat,
I could do a really good double lift for literally years before I had the guts to do it in public. Don't be shy, once it's good, get it out there. Good luck! - Mary Mowder |

Great advice Mary.
Seems like there are two schools of thought... #1 Learn a trick as fast as possible, show it to as many people as you can, learn as you go. #2 Learn a trick, practice a trick, practice again in front of a mirror, practice again in front of family. Find flaws in presentation, go back to the drawing board, public never see's brilliance in performance! I've had my time at both ends of the spectrum! I practiced my coins across routine for years before ever showing it to anyone except my room mates! Unfortunately I attempted to show Paul Harris' las vegas link way before I was ready. Now I'm so gun shy to show it again it sits quietly in the corner of my memory slowly fading away... |

That's why I use my wife as a test audience.
Although hes a bit more sophisticated then the average audience member due to what I've taught her, she has a pretty short memory for specific techniques (just isn't really interested in remembering them I think) and thus I can try the same thing in front of her multiple times til its 'right'.

I've been playing with cards a bit more nowadays myself and quite amazed at my progress of late. I mean, I'm no Lennart Green or Darwin Ortiz but then again I'm sure most here are not as well. Of course I've been getting some help on from good card men like, The Godfather, Vinny Marini, Vlad and some others as to things and I'm learnin'.
I'm mostly a coin guy too and have changed my routine a little on my daily ride into work to instead play with the cards a bit and leave working the coins as I walk about NYC. It's working rather well so far, definitely a nice change of pace. Oh and Cy, if I could show my wife a "basic double-undercut to double-lift card reversal (WHAT?)" she'd be quite amazed too and so would I.

Lol. Its a VERY basic trick.
The double undercut is a basic control to bring a selected card from the center of the deck to the top. Then the double lift is used to secretly reverse it. If you want the whole routine, PM me and I'll lay it out. Its the first trick Greg Wilson teaches on Double Take.

Its a great DVD isn't it?
I tried all 3 but ended up using his favorite, the push off. For me, its the easiest. But that's why he shows 3, cause everyone is different! When I have the time, I wan't to try to start learning Pheonix Aces.

Well, I HAVE to chime in to say that Mb is luring ME to the dark side of COINS. Well, I shall in time DAZZLE him with MY double-cut and double lift of a stack of old English pence.
He shall fear me!! (Okay, cut me a break, I am under the influence of a flu medicine that I THINK was distilled from yak sweat. Blech) *Grins to all Vlad |
