If this particular effect was "totally" new, why would it end up here in this Ramsay thread? As we don't tend to discuss character, motivation and audience dynamics here it would seem less than productive to attempt any discourse on Ramsay's particular method or props for the trick. But we should be able to get somewhere about the context of his routine via our literature and help the OP to get a gaff set up in short order. A little research into parlor magic of about 150 years ago will show that the item, its mechanics and basic handling were nothing new even then. Charles Bertram's work will give some background into the context of Ramsay's routine. Reading between the lines in Downs' book will offer some background into scaled up versions of the trick using many rather than a few coins. Going forward to Houdini or back to Robert-Houdin will get you to the crystal coin casket item and more to consider. But back to getting a decent gaffus for the trick - yeah they usually come designed for six coins. It's not too hard to reduce the number - or make friends at a machine shop.

I must chime in and say that I too saw Dean's work with this effect and even when you know what's happening, it's truly a beauty. In this sense I'd say it's certainly relevant as it may soon be yet another resource for getting these coins, and perhaps even all of the necessary items to put together a routine. The cylinder Dean put together came from material he cut out of a purse he bought at Goodwill, and it was absolutely gorgeous.
Looking forward to hearing how it works out for you, Lee! The only thing I can seem to do with coins is make them vanish...usually into some else's pocket, so it will be nice to hear how you come along in making the stack yourself!

To stay on "topic" for fear of being bashed I agree with George wholeheartedly. The Lassen Magnetic Stack is a work of art. Very versatile and most deceptive as the stack can be shown very casually as loose coins and to add to that my uncirc stack is VERY loud as slide them around between my thumb and finger casually and move them into position enforcing how loud it would be to move the coins even if just by a bit. Moreover, you can choose to use a 3 coin stack instead of 4 if you like.
Never owned the Tango Ramsey, but I did buy a pivoting Stack of Quarters (just to have a pivoting stack that no one else seems to make) that not only would NOT fit pennies, but wouldn't even fit dimes...useless! Now to get off topic (kinda) as my comment above regarding a "fear" of being bashed was dripping with sarcasm: Lassen might seem to have an arrogant disposition to some...most of your more excentric artists do. However, I've spent a LOT of coin with him (pun intended) and in all my conversations and dealings with him, he's been nothing short of kinda and most professional to work with. Finally, I'd like to thank Pete for bringing up Dean's new application for this classic gimmick! I too am looking forward to it or anything different and new I can perform with my BEAUTIFUL Stack! I'm also glad that Pete mentioned the potential release of a Dean Dill routine dealing with something in the Ramsay genre. I've usually heard of some of the best magic purchases that I've made through this type of "word of mouth" sharing.

It may be awhile as Dean is going into hospital on Monday for corrective surgery and will be out of action for a couple of weeks.

Zaprig1 wrote: Well I finally made it over to the blog to find out what this was about. I have to say, even though his post was more than disheartening it really drives home the point I was trying to make. As I read through the comments at first I was angry, then honestly hurt, then I realized that through the vulgarity and mockery, some very good points were made. I'm glad someone caught them before a product was released. I took the posted video down and am rather thankful for the chance to go back and tweak some issues before it cost me anything. I learned a lot about how to look at unsought criticism tonight, pretty cool. -Lee http://www.outofsleight.com |

I will also chime in and agree that the Lassen Magnetic Stack is excellent and really the best I've every seen or owned. I had an extremely hard time getting ahold of mine, but it was worth the wait.

However, I've spent a LOT of coin with him (pun intended) and in all my conversations and dealings with him, he's been nothing short of kinda and most professional to work with. I'm afraid cannot concur. My dealings with Lassen have been most unpleasant. I did once made the egregious mistake of complaining when I'd paid a rush fee and he didn't deliver as promised (even though I waited over a week before I brought it up). When dealing with Lassen you really just need to just pucker up and be ready to kiss some backside---because any hint of a lack of worshipful adoration will get you blacklisted. I have a number of Lassen's gaffs and most of are excellent. However, I have a Cerberus that's uncommonly--for Lassen--not excellent and I have an older flipper from him that's not as good as the more recent stuff. Nevertheless, there's no denying that for the most part he's a great craftsman. However, he's not the heaven's gift to coin gaffers he believes himself to be (even if I can attest first hand that most of his work is superb) and he is severely lacking in his customer service and customer relations skills (in my experience anyway). |

What I find interesting, personalities aside, all the top coin makers have a difficult time keeping up with orders. Makes me wish I had the tools and skills.

So it seems like it would be really cool to get to work hands on like that and be able to make whatever gaffs you dream up. Every time I fix rubber bands on a flipper I think to myself, "how hard can this be?" However, about half a day later I'm calling a handyman to fix something around the house, so... |
