I am saddened share the news that Tony Curtis has passed away at the age of 85. I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to speak with Tony about magic and Houdini in February of last year. Rest in Peace!

When I was featured on the Home Box Office Special, "The World's Greatest Escapes" he was so kind and positive it was amazing. Not like a "star" but a good buddy and fellow entertainer. I think of him often and still will. He loved magic and was proud of his part in the Houdini movie. I have tears in my eyes. Love ya... Tony Curtis.

He was a true star not a publicity machine wanna be. He loved his fans, his work and magic.
He rminds me of another of the few remaining true stars who also loves magic..John Calvert. What these gentlemen have, learned from the old Hollywood machine, is sorely missing in this world today. Rest in Peace, Mr. Curtis. No doubt your performance as Houdini inspired many magicians. Richard

That's what started it with me and collecting. I met him a few times over the years and he always impressed me. Maybe because of my hero worship I saw him in a different light. To me though, he was Tony Curtis on and off the set. I will truly miss him.
I posted some photos of him on by blog. I hope you enjoy them. Here is the link. http://houdinihimself.com/?cat=3 Kevin

He was always Houdini to me no matter what else he did. It made me sad when I saw the news this morning. R.I.P.

If I recall, he did his own stunts in the Houdini movie. I'm almost certain of it because he usually did do his own stunts like he did in the movie Trapeze with Burt Lancaster.
He had lived here in Vegas for awhile. He kept his looks up for a long time up until recently when he shaved his head. He use to sell a magic trick called Tony Curtis favorite trick. It was a card trick with beautiful ladies printed on it. You got a free choice on who you would date. Instead of ending up with one of the hotties, you got the fat ugly girl with her flesh hanging out of her thong. I didn't get a chance to meet him but my cousin did. I did see him many years ago at the Burbank Studios Café. It was thrilling to see a real legend. He is the last of that line of Hollywood stars. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Curtis at the Magic Castle in Hollywood in January of 2009.
I was lucky enought to have a photo taken with him and he autographed a photo of him in the Water Torture Cell form the 1950's movie "Houdini". Very nice man, he will be missed. =Frank= Click here to view attached image.

I'm glad the magic community has come out for Mr. Curtis. I read once where he had been coached by a magician (anyone remember?) for his Houdini role. People should also check out his magic in "Spartacus" ... he performs some egg magic, and has the moves down pretty well! Even with his thick accent, his performance in that movie is very touching and memorable.

I should have read the link from magicnewswire. Tony Curtis' coach for Houdini was George Boston.

You might also enjoy listening to the interview if you haven't as he also talks about Dunninger.

I don't remember what magic book it's in, but somewhere there is a photo of Tony Curtis and Dunninger with some of Houdini's handcuffs in a display case. A lot of people don't know or remember that before mentalism, Dunninger was an illusionist and did escapes.

I think that Marvin Miller talks about that in this interview: http://bit.ly/MMille

The Houdini movie is a good movie, but a bad Houdini movie. Curtis performs the magic very well. I liked the way he passed the hoop so much, I used it. Joseph Dunninger was supposed to be the magical adviser, but I think I too heard that George Boston taught Tony Curtis the magic sequences.
The picture of Curtis with Dunninger was in James Randi's book Houdini: His Life and Art. Also, there are a couple of pictures of Tony Curtis as Houdini in Milbourne Christopher's book Houdini A Pictorial Life. |

Correct.. at least according to Tony in my chat with him. I know it is redundant, but he talks about this very specifically in my conversation with him.

If you go to my site mentioned above, you can see the Tony Curtis photo inscribed to Dunninger. Tony thanks Dunninger for helping him in the inscription. Both Dunninger and George Boston coached him.
Here is the link to the photo. http://houdinihimself.com/?cat=3 Houdini with Tony Curtis was the best Houdini movie. Many scenes were filmed and then deleted by the time of the release of the movie. I've seen stills of some of those scenes, but never the deleted filmed scenes. Life magazine used to have a hundred or so images on the movie on their site, but They must have taken them down. If you can find them, could you please post the link here?

This past year, when I had my first chemo treatment, I was getting settled into my recliner as the poison is flowing. The nurse urges me to turn anything I want on TV. I flip around the dial and find HOUDINI starring Tony Curtis on AMC. I watched it and made silly little comments to myself. (Believe it or not, I had never seen the thing.) Anyway, all the doctors and nurses noticed I was watching it and commented. Of course, I had to tell them that while it's a great movie, it's VERY inacurate.
You'll be missed Tony. |

Tony Curtis was a Hungarian Jew and so was Houdini. The resemblance was amazing. Joey Burton is also a Hungarian Jew and he has that same look. It's kinda interesting. Rest in Peace Bernard Schwartz.

I guess it's as accurate as any Hollywood movie biography. I guess you could say the same thing about most books on Houdini too.
Either way, the movie launched many a magician to to take up the hobby.

Kevin;
I would say Milbourne Christopher, Gresham and Kenneth Silverman tried their best to be pretty accurate. Most everything else is junk, though if I missed a few, throw them in the list. The movie was just that a movie, but a great one as bios go and as one about magic's greatest icon. Tony Curtis was perfect in the part. I know they both inspired many to our art. D&D
