And, now let's remove any mystery there may have been. Let's give our audience the tools of our trade.

Not sure why the big announcement for the general public on these.
But...dollar stores sell these types decks. They're generic and junk, but they are verywhere these days. Toys R Us, Walmart, etc. carry magic kits thta have these 3 types of decks. In the end, it won't matter. The Masked Magician exposed a big illusion and Lance Burton's response? He added it right to his act! Porfessional's don't really pay attention to these things as It has nothing to do with their command over an audience.

And.....Criss Angel put out a magic kit recently and it was even advertised when his show ran.
Bookstores and public libraries have books on magic 'exposing' secrets. No damage done. Maybe a few kids and a future Copperfield got an interest in magic over it.

I agree. Svengali, Stripper and Marked decks have been staples of "consumer level" magic for a long time. In fact, my first three magic tricks I think were a Svengali, an x-ray, and a marked-stripped.
If anyone is my age they should remember "TV Magic Cards" (svengali deck) and "TV Mystery Cards" (svengali blank deck). The sold a ton of those at the time, and yet Svengali decks still sell just fine today.

They will be Split Spades with a nice finish, for under $5. I'll probably pick them up and give them to some of my nephews. The Dollar Store decks are under the Fantasma brand. They didn't look Poker size so I didn't get them. I know Magic Makers distributes these decks in regular Bicycle back which is what I have in my collection.

Is it just me or is that a really bad picture of David Blaine on the box? He should've at least took off the shades...

Decks like these open some kids up to the hobby at an early age - that is what happened to me as a kid and I'm sure many here at MC.
One of the keys to any of these beginner decks is the Magicians code, and that it is more fun to practice and get proficient a bit. My 11 year old daughter tends to want to run right out and show a trick to her friends right away, and I always have to remind her that if she practices again and again that the performance is even better. Catching the magic "bug" early is a good thing, especially in a time of economic hardships...kids and adults need the escape IMO. So kudos to David Blaine - I can't see how these would be any different than Marshall Brodien's TV decks in the 70's... and I guarantee you that he and many others minted some $$$ from selling all those pasteboards.

Well, I'm unhappy.
I love the Split Spades decks, own quite a few of them (have spent a lot of money buying them) and have always used the decks in my performances. I've even gone through the trouble of gaffing a few decks. Now those Split Spades backs will be associated with "trick decks" by the general public. Great. Why David has decided to cheapen an otherwise original and sophisticated deck of cards, is beyond me. And I assume the value of my original Split Spade decks, the ones I have put away, will drop for the same reason. :( Time to give these away to my nephews. Time to change performance decks.

At least the front of the box reads magic "effects" now rather then magic tricks.

I always have, and still do, hate the term "Magic Trick(s)". More often than not when I make a post I usually try to use the term "effect".

A few weeks ago, some kid came into my restaurant and asked if he could show me a couple of tricks to which I said "sure!"
He pulls out a couple of decks of cards, sets one aside removes one deck and begins his trick. Very quickly I can tell that this is a Svengali Deck. His routine is very basic and poorly executed...but he gets thru it. He puts that deck away and removes the 2nd deck from the box. It's a blank deck and after a second or two I see that it's actually a Mental Photography Deck. More of the same with this deck...poorly performed basic routine. His parents watched on and were glowing with pride that their son was showing a real magician some of his magic. When he was done, I applauded and gave the young man some encouragement and then asked if I could show him something with his decks of cards. I performed my Svengali Routine (that I haven't done in easily 15+ years) and fried not only the child but his parents as well. I then did Bill Malone's routine with his Mental Photography Deck and watched as this young man and his parents jaws hit the floor. They had NO IDEA how I performed either of the routines...and yet they have an understanding of how each of the decks worked. So, this goes to show two things... 1. Having good magic available "commercially" to the public is a great way to spark an interest in our craft and it is a great way to further our art...both with children and adults. We won't live forever...who will be around to do magic after we're gone? THEY are the future of magic. 2. Just because a deck of cards is available commercially to the public doesn't necessarily mean EXPOSURE has taken place. If you know how to present solid routines then the audience will have no idea that they were just deceived with a trick deck of cards. So who cares if David Blaine or Criss Angel wish to produce their own Magic Sets. If it gets more folks interested in our art, then I'm all for it! Christopher

I'm excited for 2 reason. First it's a good looking deck and second finally a good cheap marked deck. The general public wont really get much exposure to these.
