Chef master is great, very colorful. order off line or if you want to do a trial... head to Walmart. be sure to ask then if they use chef master for coloring. Ours in town do use it... they will be glad to give you a sample in a small sauce cup.... check your dove cage for molted feathers, that the birds have dropped... wash them and try the coloring on the feather before the bird,,, this way you see what you like or not, before having a bird have to set in a cage with a bad dye job.

Allen you may be right about wal mart only having gel in the bakery for their needs, so if any of you other folks check in with wal mart for a small sample be sure to check if liquid. good reminder Allen.

I actually asked General grant one day about his coloring process and he replied that his wife does not even know the secret and that he will take it with him to the grave. it will be his legacy.
so yea I don't think he is giving it up. i have to wonder if it is something so simple that we have never considered. I have never seen any one else get that plastic solid color that grant gets.

He talked me through everything when I was so confused. I am going to try the Master Chef colours. I think a big part part of getting the best look has to be brand of colour. The search continues.

What do you think it says to your audience about the kind of person you are? "Look, I've made this animal an unnatural color so that it sort of matches the wrinkled piece of fabric I'm waving around." Whatever you think of that statement, know that there are people who will find it off-putting, I promise.

If you aren't aware that most people think of us as really weird anyway, you are mistaken. If someone thinks I am a "bad person" for spraying my doves with food coloring (which is the same stuff they put in things to feed to their children, as well as the same stuff that's in the treats good owners occasionally give to their doves), I have nothing for them. It shows that they know nothing about how magicians care for their birds or the process in general. If they have a problem with the coloring, they are most likely also going to have a problem with the fact that I am using them in the first place. Compromising your art and trying to please everyone is a fool's errand. Comments like these drive me crazy. I spend 4 hours a day with my birds on non-show days alone. They eat from my hands. I know every single one of the 12 I own as individuals. Each one has strengths, weaknesses and talents. Being a magician is a lonely job. They are pretty much my family. For anyone, on this board or in an audience to tell me that I mistreat them (and obviously without knowing any details. If you knew details of how I colour or my relationship with my birds, you wouldn't make such accusations) is infuriating and extremely offensive. You and anyone else can think about me as whatever type of person you want. In turn, I'm allowed to think of such people as being totally ignorant in the truest sense of the word. If people refuse or unwilling to understand, especially after a polite explanation of the facts, they can go watch another magician. I don't need their money, or their validation of whether or not I am up to their standards as a "good person".

I'll just quote from a recent posting on the Genii forum regarding dove acts at FISM 2015:
"Dorian Grey – France – General Magic Picture a Santa Fe ‘Wild West’ saloon and someone looking like one of the 3 Amigos doing dove magic. After losing a bird or two to the ceiling & coming close to incinerating another – the judges red lit the act for the inhumane treatment of animals. Give up the doves people! It’s cruel and inhumane." and.. "Gerald le Guilloux – General Magic – France The 80’s called and they want their music back. The haunting strains of Yanni, doves, canaries, dove cages, smoke bubbles to bird ( the new theme for Rimini ), chalk board to bird, more bird cages, bird cage from jacket ( no that is not magic when you take the cage out of your jacket ), an animated flip book to dove ( granted, this looked beautiful ) but then we end with the production of two dogs from foulard. Magicians must really enjoy animal abuse as leaving two dogs wrapped up in a dark foulard for ages in the name of entertainment is not for me." Maybe I'm just one of those fruits & nuts Californians, but since I have birds, and volunteer with two bird rescues, I'm not a fan of animal acts anymore. Best regards. |

Sounds lke a comment from someone who doesn't understand how large animal productions are done. I wasn't at FISM and didn't see the act being described however, in all probability, the dogs were not wrapped up in the foulard for the length of the act. Most animal holders are nothing more than a bag to hold them. They have plenty of air and are comfortable for a period of time. There is no danger to the animal. It's not animal abuse. Mr Guilloux obviously doesn't like the music of the 80's. Many of us don't like the modern hard rock and screaming music of today but it all depends on the act. I can't see General Grant doing his act to the background of AC/DC nor can I see Dan Sperry doing his to 80's music. Musical background doesn't have anything to do with animal cruelty.

That's like telling me to stop keeping a dog because some owners can't handle them, and something might go wrong somewhere along the line and the dog might attack someone. Those people and how bad they apparently are at dove magic has no bearing on me. If people don't like my dove magic, stop watching it. I just played to a sold out room last night with my birds. People loved them. Not one bad comment. Some people think Lady Gaga sucks so bad they actually protest against her staying in the music business. Should she quit her act because of this? Probably not. But you think I should stop working with my birds because some people on magician websites don't like it? That's laughable. Maybe I'm just one of those fruits & nuts Californians, but since I have birds, and volunteer with two bird rescues, I'm not a fan of animal acts anymore. Best regards. Did you know there are a lot of people out there who call YOU an animal abuser for participating in these activities. PETA, one of the largest animal rights organizations in the world, is totally against what you are doing here. "Let me just quote": "This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to. Because domesticated animals retain many of their basic instincts and drives but are not able to survive on their own in the wild, dogs, cats, or birds, whose strongest desire is to be free, must be confined to houses, yards, or cages for their own safety." Isn't it frustrating when someone accuses you of abusing animals, but you know you don't do it and that your animals are happy? That's how I feel every single time I read comments like yours. So, if you are really concerned about my birds, let all of the birds from your rescue go first and then I'll reconsider.

PETA is an organization who preys on people's emotions in order to raise money to enrich themselves.
Some of the most well cared for and healthy animals I've seen have been show animals. Animals have such a positive response to the attention they get from audiences that it is a joy to see. People who keep pets yet object to animals in entertainment based on supposed morality fail to realize the hypocrisy of their stance. Am happy that there are many who refuse to be manipulated by the ill-named, self-appointed "crusaders" and that they choose to continue to bring joy and happiness to their audiences with their wonderful performing animals. Coloring doves looks great, IMHO, and can really add to the look of the show! |
