I am a complete newbie to the magical arts, but I have long been a lover of close up magic. My wife took me to see Ricky Jay's show, Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants) a couple years back after hearing how I longed to see the original run when it was in NYC, but I couldn't afford to buy the tickets back then.
As for knowledge, up until now I really only knew one card trick that involves the glide. After lurking and reading the excellent thread on suggested books for newcomers, I decided I had to register. Thank you all for that excellent thread. I have made a few purchases, and the first book I am working on, Royal Road to Card Magic already has me smiling after 4 pages! I look forward to wood shedding and honing my new skills, and eventually progressing to Giobbi's Card College series and other books. For me it is simply a hobby, as I am a cinematographer by profession. My interest is in impromptu close up magic with cards and coins, etc. I'm not into trick decks, etc. I want to learn the skills! Thanks for such a great forum and resource. Anthony/NdG |

Welcome Anthony,
Cards are an great place to start. You can carry them easily and you can do a lot with them. I know what you mean about good advice on books here. I'm currently reading two suggested here on the Café. Both Excellent. - Mary Mowder |

You card guys are making me expand my goals. I used to avoid cards, that was before I discovered some very good card effects. I also have Royal Road, very good book, and you might want to add 'Expert Card Technique" to your list of books to consider, if it is not already there.
Welcome. |
