As a guy who's been doing physical therapy since April (for shoulder surgery), I brought this up to my therapist, Andy. He said the muscles used would basically be your costals and intercostals, along with a little help from the abdominals. According to him, diaphragm is used more to breathe in than out. I'm no expert, just saying what he said. I've always mouth inflated, and I've been ballooning in restaurants for 14 years. I have a Qualatex hand pump and a Balloon Buddies floor pump, but find I get more pressure control using lung power.

Mouth inflating does develope the intercostals and abdominal muscles rather than the diaphram. However any training of the muscles surrounding the lungs is good. I also do some vent, so that develops the disphram.
Asthmatics normally have a weak blow, so it has to help.

I have always used my mouth for inflating balloons, as this is how I was taught 40 years ago.Only recently, has a cruise ship informed me that NO balloons may be inflated this way, due to health concerns. I never used a pump, and have made a career based in part on that fact. But I guess, if I want the gig – when in Rome...

I mouth inflate but I do also carry a pump. I was at a fair one year on a 4 hours gig when 1/2 hr into the gig my pump gave out. Needeless to say if I didn't know how to inflate by mouth I would have been out of business. Learn how to mouth inflate, you never know when you may need it.

Do not blow by mouth. You CAN 'pop' a blood vessel in your eyes, and or brain!!!!!! Ask any ER Dr.

If your popping blood vessels in your eye or your brain your doing it wrong.
Seriously, that's a myth. I would love you to include a link to a medical case proving that a balloon blown up by mouth popped something in someones brain. Have you ever seen what pop rocks and coke do to your stomach? I think the correct term is urban legend.

You can burst blood vessels... it is not "urban legend". As you tighten muscles, whether to blow up a balloon, or lifting weights, the tightened muscles squeeze the circulatory system, thus raising blood pressure. If you already suffer from hypertension...definitely do not blow by mouth! * Qualatex does have a warning on the bag regarding this.
Here are just a few of many links referring to elevated BP, and bursting blood vessels. (by balloon blowing) http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Started-in-Balloon-Modeling http://www.china-daily.org/China-News/7-......n-death/ http://www.balloonland.com/Fet/Fetdangers.htm

I have seen a woman in labour pop blood vessels during a push. It was a freaky sight. But I have never needed to put in that much effort with a balloon - not even mouth inflating a 160.

That doesn't mean I don't do those activities too. I am almost sure the child might have died if she flew in a plane and tried to pop her ears too. Freak accident happen, that doesn't mean it will happen all the time.

This thread comes up now and again. Everyone has an opinion. Use a pump or use your lungs. Personally, I don't care what you use. Use whatever makes you happy. Don't argue, just entertain. There are far more important things to worry over. By the way, I have mouth-inflated balloons, from 160's to 660's for over 44 years without any problems.

I agree it's your choice to blow by mouth or pump. One is not wrong or right.
As far as the wiki article that is just someones opinion it's not a medical case. And as far as the China article... really? You're basing your argument on that China article. Ok, but what ever way you choose to blow a balloon it's your choice. And I agree with Mark there is a better chance you'll get run over by a car than causing yourself harm from blowing a balloon by mouth. And Carl congrats on " Animated Balloons"

Just a note, I have had several people go "WOW" when I use my filbert pump. I will then joke with them, about how hard it is to use a pump.

I love my filbert pump! I blow by mouth for small gigs or balloon shows but when I need a pump for line jobs Filbert is the best pump. It's super light and comes in any color you want. In a word, the Filbert pump is Awesome! Sorry that was five words.

I broke mine at my tue night gig, he got the replacement part to me and I was up and running the folowing tue.
and I realy get good reations for using the pump. I think because most people are used to the little hand pumps. I can mouth inflate 2 260s at a time and on a good day 160s but don't bother, unless some one chalanges me. "Oh, your cheating..." I hand them one, take one for me, "ready set go!!" watch them turn funnie colors.

Since I use a pump, I wonder if this is why I am UNable to do the trick of "Spikes Through Balloon." In other words, in using the pump, the balloon in the act of inflating, can Not bypass the gimmick in the middle of the cylinder. In the presentation as shown in the video advertisement, the performer inflated the balloon by mouth, and the balloon inflated and filled the cylinder effortlessly. So does the pump have a shortcoming at performing this Spikes trick? If so, how do I overcome it?

Orville, Before putting the balloon in the cylinder, give it a couple squeezes to soften it. That should fix your problem.

I own a Filbert. I had the bottom part crack on me (my kid kicked it over) I don't use it much but it does look cool.
I mostly blow balloons by mouth. |
