I've been doing the Immortal Sowing Beans, or Chinese Cups and Balls for a little while now, and using either porcelain bowls, or plastic tea cups. Now the bowls I've found are the perfect shape, but being porcelain I've been unable to gimmick them for the Harvesting Millions Beans like I have my teacups. However the teacups are an awkward shape to work with, and I don't feel the moves are as deceptive with them.
So I vaguely remember a chap at FISM 2009 in Beijing selling a set of bowls complete with the gimmicked bowls for both the water production and Harvesting Millions Beans, but I can't find any contact details for him. So I was wondering if anyone here might know the chap I'm talking about and has his contact details, or might know anywhere else I could get a set of professionally made bowls. I do speak Mandarin Chinese so am not worried about communication. Thank you, Paul |

I've very fortunately happened across some perfect bowls to make my own. Problem sorted!

Where did you get the routine for this?

A book called Chinese Classic Illusion Magic by Fu Qifeng and Xu Qiu ISBN 978-7-5059-6390-0
I bought it at FISM in Beijing 2009, it's taken me a year to translate enough to learn a routine. I still haven't learnt all of it as it goes on to teach phases with 5 bowls and 10 beans. I'm sticking to 2 bowls and 5 beans. Studying it has been fascinating though. It's a great study into subtlety and feints; and challenge style magic. It's also easy to see how routines like rice bowls could have grown out of it. There's also some very interesting sleights involving blowing on the beans, that've led me on to develop some more western style alternatives! Once my bowls are ready my plan is to video a performance of the routine. I'll post a link when it's ready. If there is enough interest I don't mind to write up some of the methods in English. Paul |

I wonder if the Ramsay routine would work as a lead it to this?

I would be interested in learning about this, if only from an historical point of view.

Now that was a different, interesting, and beautiful routine. While I could follow most of the moves (years of experience put me in the know for much of this) and loved the almost Benson Bowl sequence I was fooled/caught of guard at a number of point.
What a nice routine thanks for posting.

Yep, that's the one. There are varying routines like our own cups and balls. This chap is the guy who was selling it at FISM. Thank you for the link! Quite expensive though isn't it!

Yes, it is, especially if you consider the nature of everything else on that web site.

Just picking a few nits....
I like the vanishes when he touches them to the mat, and leaves his palm down. But it seems the bowl would block the view of any one a few steps in front. I realize he wants them in close proximity to the audience right bowl. But maybe that vanish should be done on top of the bowl? Passing the ball into the first bowl, without showing it, is very clever and sets him up two-fold. I wonder if the audience remembers that there are 2 balls under the bowl when he returns to it? It seems that he over-proves the vanish of the bowl. I doubt a laymen would suspect a silver bowl was concealed in a flat piece of cloth. And in the off chance that they did, it would make the water and fish even more surprising. The wand also shouldn't have been just used as a proving prop. It's a magical object. I would have waved it and tapped the bowl as part of a magic gesture. Letting the sound be incidental to you, would make it more convincing for them. Very nice though.

I noticed that as well Pete. Sadly, I am sure there are those who will support them to get a 'bargain' with no regard to the true source of the products.

They pinched Blaney's hoop. Even pinched the name. They even pinched some of the material on his web site.
So he had a friend order one of their knockoff hoops. They DON'T WORK!!!! So anyone who orders one of those hoops deserves what happens. BTW, they don't recognize our intellectual property laws in China. We don't recognize theirs.

As promised I've carried on working on the routine, and am now happy enough with it to let you guy's see it. It's not strictly 100% true to the traditional Chinese methods, I've made it my own and do it my own way as with any routine. But it's very close. So for your enjoyment:
