What is the procedure to get an exotic animal permit? Is it a state or federal issue? How much are the permits? What are the qualifications?

In Michigan, check your Department of Natural Resources website, Mike.

Thanks, Skip, that shows a lot of information about wildlife animals in Michigan. But isn't there a permit difference in law requiring wildlife animals (racoon, deer, swan, etc) and exotic animals (platpus, slouth, spider monkey, tiger cub, etc)?

I'm sorry I was not clear enough at the start.

I would think that either the state Dept. of Agriculture or the state Dept. of Natural Resources would cover those permits, as well. Maybe ya'll do things differently up north.

I got off my butt to do some searching myself.

It is easier to have exotic animals in your state, NC than it is in my state, MI:

I see in Michigan it also comes down to the counties and cities. Stroll down to Michigan:

Okay, now I know the procedure:

Sometimes it makes me feel good to get off my butt.

Keep in mind that what the law considers "exotic" is not the same as what vets and common men consider "exotic."

My Macaw is an "exotic" by vet and common definitions, but does not require an exotic permit.

A wildcat of almost any kind, on the other hand, generally does.

Also, animal ownership laws vary from state to state. For a long time in California I don't think you could privately own a Ferret even with a permit... now they are legal as common pets in most states incl California.

Finally *some* animals are protected by Federal Law. Many endangered species for instance. Those you need a federal permit for I think...
