OK, after many many performances, something happened that I had never anticipated (but I should have seen it coming).
Last night one of the spectators lied and didn't sit down. Looked me straight in the face and named a card that was an impossibility. I chalked it up as a miss, but would rather have a preventive solution or good out. Any suggestions from those of you that perform this routine?

Invisible deck. say, "Wow...that's amazing, because I felt this might happen, yadayadayada".

I had the same problem a few weeks back with a smart @@@ while performing "Get Sharky." I also should have seen in coming as the spec had bragged that he used to work as an stagehand with Copperfield in Vegas and could not be fooled.
While peeking the card he named an impossible card, with a cheshire cat smile. I should have had an ID with me but didn't... so ya, I will be ready the next time.

The ID is always the perfect out for a card trick gone awry. Never leave home without it!

I'd just pull their card out of my pocket or wallet, after looking through the deck, finding that it's not there.
Switching for a regular deck and doing a cull, palming out the selection will work. This works especially well if using the Karrell Fox method for TOD. A pocket index will work, too. |

Or use Marc Oberon "Bang On" instead of BW or ID

I understand you're desire to have a good out, Steven and an ID would be great - and...perhaps having a miss will make it that much more believable for the audience...you know how that goes, and it may prevent that particular participant from wanting to "ruin" another effect.

If it was impossible, and he purposely ruined your effect, I would find a way to call him out on it, without calling him out on it. Well, sorry it didn't work, that's what happens when you don't practice enough I guess or something. Or just say, "You are lying".
No I am not "Yes you are" No I am not "Yes, you are, there are only three cards in the whole deck!!!!" Showing cards. Wait, maybe that won't really work either.

It's possible that the spectator wasn't trying to screw with you but just got confused. Maybe she didn't know the suits of the cards. Maybe she was nervous and didn't really get a peek at a card, but didn't want to embarass herself. I know that there are hecklers who would try to mess up a trick, but I've rarely encountered these people. I think most times it's just a matter of the spectator making an honest mistake.

Another option would be to admit that you "missed" and talk about how these reading aren't always 100%. Then call the spectator up for a special experiment. Ask her a few questions to supposedly get a better understanding of how she thinks. Now go into Invisible Deck, center tear, etc and this time get an exact hit. The audience sees you overcome a supposedly real challenge and you can bet that the drama for the second reveal would be high.

I dunno Caleb, I don't think I would ever ask a problematic participant to come up and potentially sabotage yet another portion of my act.

I think it depends on if they were intentionally trying to screw you up. If it was accidental, I can actually see them trying to really help you the second time around.
